The WMD Editor WordPress plugin by Chad Coleman is a ported version of the recently popular WMD Editor, a WYSIWYM Markdown Editor. What is WMD?WMD is a simple, lightweight HTML editor for blog comments, forum posts, and basic content management. You can add WMD to any textarea with one line of code. Add live preview with one line more. Update to Akismet 2.1.8

7. September 2008 ·

The first thing I did when I went back to blogging was to make sure my WordPress installation was up-to-date so I upgraded it to the latest version which was WordPress 2.6.1. I also updated all the plugins that I have via the Plugins section of the dashboard. One of the plugins I updated was Akismet and at that time, the version available was 2.1.7. All upgrades went smoothly and I was able to post my last entry, reply to some comments, check blog stats and other stuff.Because of the 3 month long hiatus, I wasn't able to do much with my blog except for approving comments. Spam comments have piled up and numbered at the thousands. No matter how much spam comments I have, I always make it a habit/practice to check the spam queue for valid comments. When I was done going through the list, I clicked on the Delete All button and waited for the spam comments to disappear. It was taking quite a while to finish and at first I thought it was taking long because of the large amount of spam comments I had but when I saw that the browser stopped loading and the spam comments were still there I knew something was wrong. Anyways, I tried doing it again and ended up repeating the process like three times to no avail.

Poll: Post Ratings – To Use or Not To Use?

5. March 2008 ·

It's been almost a year since I installed the WP Post Ratings plugin here on JaypeeOnline. Anyways, I installed this plugin because I liked the idea of having my posts rated by you, my readers and visitors. This helps me in two ways. First, I can get your immediate feedback regarding the post. Second, ratings that you submit on each post would help coming readers to have an idea whether that particular post is good or not. Of course, assuming that the previous ratings were unbiased or without any prejudice. The Post Ratings plugin usually works better for a blog with a lot of regular readers and traffic. Here in my blog, only a handful of my regular readers use this feature and rate my posts. Most of the post ratings are submitted by anonymous guests who are brought here by search engines and other sources. Although the response or use of the Post Ratings plugin isn't what I expected, I haven't removed it yet because I believe that it is a useful tool for me and for you, my readers.I'm blogging about this because recently, an anonymous guest rated several of my posts. Nothing wrong with that right? Isn't that the purpose of the plugin? Yes, but the problem is this anonymous guest is deliberately and maliciously posting negative post ratings to my articles. This also negates the previous post ratings that other readers posted. If you've seen it you know that I'm using stars for my post ratings and this "guest" rated several of my posts with 1 star including posts that other readers found to be very useful and was previously rated at 5 stars.

WP 2.3+ Tiger Style Admin Fix

19. February 2008 ·

The Tiger Style Admin was the first admin theme plugin that I came across and used in my WP dashboard. It's also the first admin theme I featured in my Pimp My Dashboard series. When WordPress 2.3 was released, there were many plugins that were affected like the Extended Live Archives and Ultimate Tag Warrior. The Tiger Style Admin was also affected but unlike other compatibility issues that some plugins had, it only has a couple issues with the formatting. If you have tried using Tiger Style Admin on WP 2.3+ I think you know what I'm talking about. For the sake of those who don't, what happened is that the WP dashboard footer which contains the WordPress version, Documentation and Feedback isn't aligned properly and floats above it's proper place. Before:After:The other issue is the "View site »" link in the upper right corner of the dashboard which can be barely seen because of the small font size. I was able to fix these issues by editing some code in the Tiger Style Admin's stylesheet. Before:After:In order to fix these issues, here's what you need to do:

Blog Updates 01.08

It's been a while since I last did a blog update post. It's not that I haven't had any updates to post but I just didn't have time to do it especiallly during the two month hiatus. Aside from the recent theme reboot, I've also updated, uninstalled and installed plugins.Uninstalled Plugins:Who Sees Ads? - I had to disable/uninstall the Who Sees Ads? plugin because it suddenly caused a fatal error the other day. It brought the site down and even prevented me from accessing the WP dashboard. At first, I thought that maybe Dreamhost was upgrading or fixing something so I sent them a ticket. When the support person replied I found out that the problem was caused by the Who Sees Ads? plugin and that it was eating up more than the allocated memory in my server. What I did was I deleted the plugin folder via FTP and it fixed the problem.I've contacted the author and discussed the issue with him. I'll try to use the plugin again one of these days and see if the error pops up again.WP 2.3 Related Posts - I used this plugin because it came by default with the current theme I'm using. However I noticed that it didn't display related posts on some of my posts so I decided to switch back to the previous plugin I used - Related Posts.Brian's Latest Comments - Used this plugin in my previous theme to display recent comments on the sidebar. Now with my new theme, I no longer need a plugin to display the recent comments.New Tag Cloud - Also had this come by default with my theme. This plugin adds a widget that you can use to display tags. I uninstalled it because I didn't need it and I don't use widgets on my blog.

Permalinks Migration Plugin Vulnerability

25. January 2008 ·

Over at Weblog Tools Collection, an article was posted earlier today regarding a vulnerability in version 1.0 of the Deans Permalinks Migration Plugin. The said vulnerability involves XSRF or Cross-site request forgery and allow the attacker to steal valid credentials from the database. The person who found out about this vulnerability and goes by the name g30rg3_x has an explanation for this vulnerability:Since the variable $dean_pm_config[’oldstructure’] its not correctly sanitized (when retrieving), this allow any user to store/save “malicious code” inside the database and later be injected this “malicious code” when the data is retrieved. Using the XSRF as a “combo” we can create crafted pages that will force users to conduct this injection and steal some valid credentials to the WordPress based CMS.
