With the increasing demand and popularity of premium WordPress themes, some users forget about the free ones especially the ones I call “freemium” themes – premium quality but free WordPress themes. One example is the Falkner Press – Premium WordPress Theme, a premium quality free WordPress theme courtesy of Camel Graph.

The Falkner Press Premium WordPress Theme is a 3 column, widget-ready, magazine-styled theme that comes with its own admin panel options page and a featured post slideshow on the homepage.

Basic features:

  • 3 column
  • Widget-ready
  • Ad banner management
  • Admin panel theme options
  • 11 ready-made templates/color schemes
  • Featured post slideshow
  • Bottom bar

*Requires the latest version of WordPress (2.7 and above).

My Take:
The Falkner Press Premium WordPress Theme is another cool and customizable freemium theme that has some features that most free WordPress themes don’t have. It has a section to display the blog author’s latest tweets, RSS feed subscription and Feedburner chicklet and 125×125 banner ads. Falkner Press is also available in 10 different ready-to-use templates/color schemes to suit anyone’s taste or color preference. You can download the other color schemes from the Falkner Press Theme Series page.

The theme is easy to install like most WordPress themes. The only thing that requires some special configuration are the slideshow and the post thumbnails. To know more about the installation, configuration and requirements of the Falkner Press theme, make sure that you read the instructions in the theme page or the Readme file included in the theme download. The theme author also included the PSD file for the logo in the theme download so the user can customize the logo to their personal preference.

For those who are interested in using this theme, another thing you need to know is that this theme requires the flickr-rss and twitter for wordpress plugins in order to use the Twitter section and display the author’s latest tweets and also to display your Flickr photostream at the bottom bar.

Interesting review. Thank you for sharing, Jaypee!

@David – Please take note that the download file/folder contains several files and folders (Themes & Plugins). The folder that you need to upload to wp-content/themes is the folder named “falkner” inside the “Themes” folder.

If that doesn’t work, make sure that the style.css file is present and that its in the right directory/location. Let me know if you get it to work or not.

I uploaded the file and I am told the theme is broken because the Stylesheet is missing.

Any clue what to do? Thanks.

@K – This theme is suitable for people who like visual-rich themes and I know you’re not one of them. Hehe I know you like simple, minimalistic themes. Ok, don’t worry I’ll find one and do a review of it soon. ;)

Jaypee this looks good but too many things going on in the “homepage”. Where’s my typography theme? Any good source?

  • JP Habaradas, August 18, 2009 @ 7:00 AM Reply

@joie – Me too, I also like magazine styled themes. That’s true, the featured post slideshow adds style to the theme. Thanks bai! Glad you liked it. :)

@deuts – Yes it does. One of the best looking free magazine style WP theme. Well you’ve always liked simple, minimalistic themes right? :)

  • deuts, August 17, 2009 @ 9:45 PM Reply

The theme looks great for a magazine-type theme. However, let’s just say that I’m more becoming biased towards a white-background plain simple theme right now. :D
