Sony PS3 Slim Now Official

Sony Playstation 3 Slim

Yesterday at the GamesCom 2009 event in Cologne, Germany, Sony put an end to all the rumors of a new PS3 console by officially introducing the Sony Playstation 3 or PS3 “Slim”.

“The internal design architecture of the new PS3 system, from the main semiconductors and power supply unit to the cooling mechanism, has been completely redesigned, achieving a much slimmer and lighter body. Compared to the very first PS3 model with 60GB HDD, the internal volume, as well as its thickness and weight, are trimmed down to approximately two-thirds. Furthermore, power consumption is also cut to two-thirds, helping to reduce fan noise. While inheriting the sleek curved body design of the original model, the form factor of the new PS3 system features a new meticulous design with a textured surface finish, giving an all-new impression and a casual look. With the compact body and casual appearance, the newly introduced model will appeal to a wider audience who are looking to buy the best entertainment system for their home.”

The new Sony Playstation 3 Slim has almost the same features as the last PS3 model except that it will have a larger hard drive – 120 GB HDD and it will be 33% smaller and 36% lighter.

The Sony PS3 Slim will be available in stores and start shipping next month, September 1st to be exact. It will retail for 299 euros in Europe, 29980 yen in Japan and for those of you who are in the United States, the unit would cost you $299 which is the same price that the current 80 GB PS3 model is selling right now. So if you’re planning to buy a new gaming console and have been eyeing the PS3, I recommend that you hold that thought til next month and just get the new Sony PS3 Slim. With this release, we should expect price cuts for the older versions of the PS3.

Personally, I’m not really into purchasing expensive game consoles. I’d rather spend my money on a gaming rig – a desktop computer that has high-end specs that can play the latest video games and at the same time be used for surfing the web, blogging, watching movies, etc. But that’s just me. I know some avid gamers prefer gaming consoles over gaming rigs.

If you can’t wait for September, you can now pre-order the Sony PS3 Slim from Amazon.com.

What do you think of the new Sony Playstation 3 Slim? If you don’t own a PS3 or any other gaming console, would you consider buying the new Sony PS3 Slim?

  1. @Industry News – I’m guessing that you owned an earlier model of the Playstation before, right? Anyways, the price for this PS3 Slim is just okay although as a consumer you always want the price to be cheaper. $299 for a new PS3 model with more disk space is not bad at all. But yeah, the price cuts for the older PS3 would definitely boost their sales.

  2. Industry Newssays:

I am more of a pc gamer myself too, but the Playstation does have a special place in my heart. Their current offering isn’t competitive due to price though, so the drop in pricing on the current bulkier PS3 is something which should help boost sales a bit for them.

  3. @Hilary – Yeah, waiting a few months is a wise decision. Like you mentioned, some flaws might come out including a fix/patch and the price might also go down after a few months. I think many people are tempted to buy the PS3 coz it can also be a bluray player. :)

  4. I think I am going to buy one after a few months of it’s release if there are no major flaws with it. I personally don’t really play video games but I do like the option too. The ps3’s main function for me would be the use of the blue ray player.

However, I’m not a very big fan of the design. Boo on the curves / seams.

  5. @Michael – Its cheaper in the sense that its gonna sell for $299, which is how much the current 80 GB PS3 model is selling for and yes, it will be available worldwide next month.
