Garmin, one of the largest manufacturers and popular brands of GPS (Global Positioning System) units announced yesterday a product recall that affected a few models in the Garmin Nüvi series. The cause of the recall according to the company were bad batteries that were produced by a specific manufacturer that had the potential to overheat and lead to a fire hazard when used by a certain Gamin Nüvi model with a specific PCB (printed circuit board) design.
This recent product recall involves the following Garmin Nüvi models: 200W, 250W, 260W, 7xx and 7xxT (where xx is a two-digit number) and involves around 1,250,000 million units, 750,000 of which were sold in the United States. According to the company, so far there have only been 10 reported cases of the overheating problem and none have caused any injury or damage and that the product recall is just a precautionary measure. I guess Garmin just wants to make sure that it doesn’t lead to any of that or any lawsuits before they do something about it and fix it.
I bought a Garmin Nüvi 260W early last year so when I found out that the model was involved in this recall, I immediately checked if the unit I had was one of those affected. Fortunately, the one I have isn’t involved in the recall and doesn’t have the defective battery.

@joie – Is that so? Hehe..yeah, at first I was worried because the model I got was in the recall list. But when I checked the serial number, I was relieved to find out that the unit I got wasn’t affected. :D
When I read your post about garmin I immediately read if your Garmin Nüvi 260W is included in the recall. I remembered your post before when you bought your gadget. I am glad your garmin is a safe gadget.
@kinverross – I know, but they’ve done the recall before anyone got seriously injured or caused any serious damage to property which I think is a good move on their part and yeah, its still small compared to the scale of the Toyota recall.
