Today is Blog Action Day ’09

Blog Action Day 2009

This is a little bit late but the clock hasn’t struck 12 midnight and its still October 15th, so officially its still Blog Action Day. I promised that I would participate in this year’s Blog Action Day and I’m gonna make sure that I keep it. I’ve been trying hard since yesterday to come up with something to write about for this Blog Action Day but I couldn’t think of anything.

This year’s theme for Blog Action Day is Climate Change. We all know how our weather has been acting weird the past few years and the condition of our environment is far from what it was a few decades back. We’ve also witnessed the recent increase in calamities and natural disasters all around the world and these past few weeks, my home country of the Philippines has been hit the most. First was Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) that caused the worst floods in decades, destroying homes, buildings, vehicles and even claiming lives. Next came the 6.7 earthquake that hit the Southern part of the Philippines and fortunately this time, no one was hurt. Then super Typhoon Pepeng (Parma) came and passed by the Philippines, only to come back after a few days and hitting hard the Northern part – Baguio, Benguet and La Union just to name a few. My father was one of the people who got stranded in Baguio. He was there together with some 300 delegates attending a seminar.

Anyways, my point here is that we need to realize that the condition of our environment is getting worse. We also have to acknowledge that somehow, our actions in the past have contributed to the deterioration of our environment including the rapid change in our climate. Anthropogenic factors are human activities that change the environment and among those that cause the most concerns are the increase in CO2 levels from the emissions of fossil fuel, use of aerosols and deforestation.

As my contribution to Blog Action Day 2009, I’m sharing 5 Emerging Green Technologies that we can use to stop or lessen the harmful effects on our environment.

1. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) – Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a means of mitigating the contribution of fossil fuel emissions to global warming, based on capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from large point sources such as fossil fuel power plants, and store it away from atmosphere by different means. It can also be used to describe the scrubbing of CO2 from ambient air as a geoengineering technique.

2. Green Brownfield Remediation – Greening Brownfields provides a framework for sustainable remediation practices that land planners and developers can use to convert a land liability into a sustainable asset. This forward-looking reference presents best practices and creative thinking on how to increase property value by viewing contaminated properties as an opportunity.

Green remediation also uses alternative energy like wind and solar to power machinery used in the process, reuses water – pretty much taking the longer, greener route to return a brownfield to a livable state.

3. Biohydrocarbons – The Fischer-Tropsch process is a catalyzed chemical reaction in which carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane are converted into liquid hydrocarbons of various forms. Typical catalysts used are based on iron and cobalt. The principal purpose of this process is to produce a synthetic petroleum substitute.

4. Any Kind of Turbine – Utilizing turbines like wind turbines and build wind farms to harness wind power. Wind power is an alternative power source which can generate electricity to power our homes, schools, offices and other facilities that use electricity. There are already a number of wind farms here in the US, but we need to build more of those.

5. Water Desalination – Water is desalinated in order to be converted to fresh water suitable for human consumption or irrigation. Sometimes the process produces table salt as a by-product. It is used on many seagoing ships and submarines. Most of the modern interest in desalination is focused on developing cost-effective ways of providing fresh water for human use in regions where the availability of fresh water is limited.

Aside from implementing green technologies like the mentioned above, we as individuals can start with our own lifestyle and within our homes. Aside from recycling, there are other stuff we can do to help like conserving water, using energy efficient lighting and purchasing electronics, appliances and devices that use less energy.

As part of my contribution, I don’t only intend to publish this post about climate change but I will do my best to promote and feature clean and green emerging technologies here on JaypeeOnline. I encourage my readers and other bloggers to do the same thing and treat each day as a day to promote awareness about climate change. We need to take care of Mother Nature and Planet Earth is our home. We are all in this together, so we need to do our part and help each other.

How about you guys, did you participate in this year’s Blog Action Day? What did you blog blog about? What are the other things that we can do to help

  1. @K – You did? It’s all good. You can still write about it even if its not Blog Action Day anymore. Like I said in the post, we need to treat everyday as Blog Action Day and not only as an annual, one day event.

Yes, we really need to start acting now and we can just start on our own homes, our own neighborhoods. Just being a good example to our family, friends and neighbors is already a big step in the fight against climate change. Thanks for sharing! :)

  2. I’ve completely forgot to post this on Blog Action Day. The recent calamity was a wake-up call for everybody.

Save energy, don’t cut trees, say NO to plastic bags. Educate people how to dump their rubbish, but we can never achieve this if we don’t built a community to focus on this change, many people just ignore these kasi.

Here, like the H1N1, at work we do a short 15mins talk about the disease, nakakaumay na pero we still have to take precautions.

We should act now to curb Climate Change.

  3. better late than no post hehe. well, i think the popular movement like for example shutting down one of our machines for an hour or so can be a gigantic act in at least delaying the worsening condition of our mother earth.
