Tweet Nest – Browsable, Searchable & Customizable Twitter Archive

Tweet Nest

I’m not sure if you still remember Like it? Tweet it!, but it’s a widget I blogged about a few months back that lets blog or website visitors share online content to Twitter with customized messages. Anyways, the author of the Like it? Tweet it! widget – Andy Graulund, has come up with a new cool project that I’m sure many Twitter users would love. It’s called Tweet Nest – a browsable, searchable and easily customizable archive and backup for all your tweets.

Features:

  • Archive – use Tweet Nest to easily store, browse and search amongst your tweets to find exactly what you’re looking for, and let others do the same. New-style retweets, geographic places, and links to original tweets included.
  • Backup – it serves as a backup of your precious tweets on your own server. Tweets that might grow too old to be retrieved from Twitter.com will not fade out here, allowing you to go back in time as much as possible.
  • Media – it offers an easier way of viewing your tweets at a glance, as they include thumbnails of media like photos hosted on common providers, such as TwitPic. Additionally, for every month view, you get an elegant yet simple bar chart of the number of tweets, retweets, and replies you’ve sent every day.
  • Customize – it is something you host on your own server, so if you know your web development awesomesauce, you can make your tweet archive your own by easily changing color values in the config file, or even changing the behavior of the whole thing by changing the stylesheet or some of the other code if you so wish.

If you’re looking for a demo and would like to see Tweet Nest in action, you can check out the author’s own tweet archive.

    Installation notes:

    • Tweet Nest is programmed in PHP
    • Requires a MySQL database to work
    • Tested in LAMP environments (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP)

*may work on other types of servers, but you’ll have to figure that out for yourself.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • PHP 5.2 or higher (or 5.1 with the PECL JSON module installed)
    • MySQL 4.1 or higher

To learn more about Tweet Nest or get detailed instructions on how to install and customize your own Twitter archive, check out the official website.

I haven’t tried installing or using this except for the demo provided by the author, but from what I’ve seen I can say that it will be a very useful tool that will benefit active Twitter users. With Tweet Nest, you can save a lot of time and effort searching for a specific tweet that you posted or retweeted in the past.

If you have design skills, you can customize Tweet Nest and create a different style/layout for your Twitter archive. If you have programming skills, you can create extensions (Tweet Nest has rudimentary support for extensions) that will enable Tweet Nest to do other cool stuff.

What do you think of Tweet Nest? Anyone tried or are using it right now? What other programs or online service do you use to create your own Twitter archive/backup? Please share your thoughts by leaving a comment below.

  1. @deuts – Heard/read about Ozh’s Twitter Archiver but never got to try it out. Yeah, that’s one thing that I liked about this app is that its a separate app. Although having/implementing a Twitter Archive within a WordPress blog is also cool. :D

  2. I have recently installed Ozh Twitter Archiver, a plugin for WordPress that lets you archive your tweets as well in a WordPress blog, at Deuts Tweets. Now I know there’s an alternative. At least this one is a separate application and you can do away already with a lots of bloat in WordPress that you might not need in a Twitter Archive.

  3. @Jhay – That’s true, but the problem is you can’t access their Twitter archive online (yet). :P

I’m also planning of creating my own Twitter archive but haven’t had the time to do it. Hopefully, next week.

  4. Pretty interesting tool. Though the US Library of Congress already has archived my Tweets for me. :P

I’d take it for a spin this coming weekend. See where it goes, maybe it will push me to Tweet some more.

  5. @shashank – Really? What a coincidence. Hehe Anyways, I read about this on FriendFeed a week ago but only had time to write about it today. You’re welcome and thanks for stopping by. :)

would you believe i was planning to write this post 2day itself…
i had read abt this from MAG PC WORLD.
    thanks for share!

  7. @dimaks – I think so too, especially if you use Twitter a lot. I know, but maybe Twitter doesn’t think its that vital to the Twitter ecosystem for now. I’m sure they’ll come up with something like this when it becomes more popular or when more users request for it.
