Google’s Keyword Tool has a new competitor and its called the Free Keyword Tool. This new keyword tool is brought to us by WordStream, a company that specializes in keyword management tools for PPC (Pay Per Click) and SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

The Free Keyword Tool is continuously updating a database of over a billion of the world’s most popular keywords, aggregating over a trillion unique searches. This means that you get more keywords returned FASTER, for FREE!

Keyword tools are very useful and helpful tools to improve your pay-per-click advertising and other ad campaigns and also with Search Engine Optimization. With the help of a keyword tool like the Free Keyword Tool, you can look for and find the deep, mid and long-tail variations of different keywords which are both very important when conducting keyword research. It also helps you find related terms and synonyms for your keywords.

Using the Free Keyword Tool is easy and simple. First, type in a keyword that you want in the space provided and then click on “Get Keyword Ideas”. After that, you’ll be presented with this page. As an example, I chose the keywords – “free wordpress themes“.

As you can see, the top part is divided into 2 parts, the List Keywords and Related Keywords. The bottom part also has 2 parts, first is the Results that displays the Top 100 keywords that are related to the keyword/s you provided. The other one is Relative Volume which is the estimate of how often a particular keyword is searched on. A higher relative volume means that the keyword is searched on more frequently.

The Free Keyword Tool suggests related keywords and even misspelt versions of the keyword/s. Based on the sample keywords I used – “wordpress themes”, the top 3 results are free wordpress themes, unique free wordpress themes and top free wordpress themes. I can now use these keywords to help me with my keywords research.

If you find any keyword that you like in the Related Keywords list and would like to add it to the List Keywords, just click on the check icon beside it and it will be automatically added to the keywords list. Once you have the desired keywords, click on “Submit Keywords” and you’ll be given a new set of results that are related to the keywords you provided.

There are two other options found at the bottom of the Results.

First is the option to have the complete set of keywords sent to your email address for FREE. The second option is to copy the complete set of keywords which you can paste into an spreadsheet or document for filing.

The Free Keyword Tool was recently released for public beta after being on private beta for a few months, so anyone can try it out now for free.

  1. @Luc J – The company behind the Free Keyword Tool, WordStream is into the PPC and SEO business so I guess they have a reliable source for these keywords. But then, that’s a very interesting point you pointed out there. I’ll try to look into these later. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)

  2. It’s obvious where Google gets the data, billions of searches are performed on their own infrastructure. But I wonder where an outsider can get accurate data about keyword searches?
