Remember the early Christmas gift that I was talking about? Well this is it, a brand new Lenovo IdeaPad Y560. My Toshiba Satellite A305-S6872 was still running fine but it was already slowing down and started to show signs of “old age” like failing to boot up at times, so I decided not to wait until it died on me and get a new one. At first, I was planning on getting another Toshiba laptop but after scanning the different models they had on Best Buy, Newegg, Amazon, and other stores I couldn’t find what I was looking for specs-wise.

A few days before Black Friday, I saw an ASUS N61JQ-XV1 on sale on Amazon for only $869 and planned on buying it. While browsing for other laptop models, I came across the Lenovo IdeaPad Y560 (0646-54U) which was also on sale on Amazon for $899. Both laptops had almost the same specifications – 1.73 GHz Intel Core i7-740QM Quad-Core Processor, 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 graphics, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium, etc. The only difference between them was that the Asus model was 16″ and had a 7200rpm HDD, while the Lenovo one only had 15.6″ and 5400rpm HDD. I decided to go with the Asus laptop not only because it was a bit cheaper but also because it had a slightly bigger screen and a faster HDD. But just as I was about to purchase it, something inside of me kept me from doing it. So I decided to go online and read more reviews about both laptops and I ended up finding a $530 Lenovo IdeaPad Y560 coupon.

At first, I wasn’t sure if that coupon would work so I had to try it out myself. I went to Lenovo’s direct store, tried it, and to my delight, it worked! When the coupon worked, I didn’t waste any time and immediately bought the Lenovo IdeaPad Y560 (0646-5GU). The original retail price was $1,399 but because of the $530 coupon, the price went down to $869. Not only that, but it also had FREE shipping and I received the laptop within 5 days.

I was really fortunate to find that $530 coupon and was able to use it just a few days before it expired. With the Lenovo IdeaPad Y560 (0646-5GU), I was able to get a fast processor – 1.73 GHz Intel Core i7-740QM Quad-Core Processor, a good graphics card – 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730, a fast hard drive – 500GB 7200rpm HDD and an upgraded memory – 6GB RAM all for the same amount that I would’ve paid if I purchased the Asus laptop I found on Amazon. Had I decided to get that and wanted to upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 6GB, that would’ve cost me an additional $50 at least.

I’ve only had the Lenovo IdeaPad Y560 (0646-5GU) for about two weeks now, but haven’t had any problems with it so far. I’ve already installed all the necessary programs, transferred all my files, and last but not least, set it up to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu. The only thing that I don’t like about it is that the built is not as strong as I wanted it to be or expected it to be but nevertheless, I’m still very happy with it and it has performed very well according to its specifications. I’ll post a more detailed review of it soon so if you’re interested, watch out for it.

  1. I just bought a Lenovo Y560 Ideapad Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit 500 gig HD and 8 Gigs of RAM

The YouCam quality is poor and the built-in mic does not work and I can’t seem to find any help on this issue whatsoever. I’ve been searching for about 3 days now. Anyone?

  2. Hi,

I like its simple and cool design.
I guess that the specs and price are correct.
The Lenovo brand is not well known here in Portugal, but I’ve read good reviews about it.
Maybe I’m going to say something stupid, but doesn’t or didn’t belong to IBM or to some other major brand ?

    José

  3. A great Christmas gift to yourself dude!

What a coincidence, I’m also planning on replacing my Compaq Presario notebook with a new one from Lenovo. Have heard lately that HP’s laptops had gone down in quality with some of their popular models suffering from factory defects and worse, a changed warranty policy that made things difficult for customers who wanted to have their units repaired.
