@Brand Police – Yep, I think that’s what happened. I’ve seen this “fake” logos come out a few years back when WordPress haven’t posted their official logos on their site. Designers tried to create their own logos without knowing really paying attention into the full details of the logo.

I also came across this recently, and I’m trying to look into WHY the other fake version even exists at all. I would suspect it’s because unlike now WordPress may not have always been so “free” with their logo availability, so someone tried to recreate one and didn’t quite get it right. Do you have any idea where it came from or why the fake exists?

@Joseph – Yep, many people even WordPress users are still not aware about this. That’s why I’m trying to do my part by sharing about it so more users would be made aware about it. :)
