href="http://jaypeeonline.net/go/servint.php">Servint announcing the upgrade of their entire VPS line – Essential, Signature, Ultimate, Super, Super125 and SuperVPS 2x.

The VPS upgrades will give customers up to 50% more RAM and 20% increase in Disk Space. Current customers with any VPS package will receive the upgrades for FREE (no additional charges). These new upgrades along with the company’s decision to reduce the number of customers allocated to each virtualized server means customers will have more CPU resources and will see a very significant drop in server load.

Old Package Specifications:

Essential – RAM 768MB (Burst 1.5GB); Disk Space 50GB

Signature – RAM 1.5GB (Burst 3GB); Disk Space 75GB

Ultimate – RAM 2GB (Burst 4GB); Disk Space 100GB

Super – RAM 4GB (Burst 8GB); Disk Space 100GB

Super125 – RAM 4GB (Burst 8GB); Disk Space 125GB

SuperVPS 2x – RAM 8GB (Burst 16GB); Disk Space 150GB

New Package Specifications:

Essential – RAM 768MB (Burst 1.5GB); Disk Space 60GB

Essential+ – RAM 1GB (Burst 2GB); Disk Space 65GB

Signature – RAM 2GB (Burst 4GB); Disk Space 90GB

Ultimate – RAM 3GB (Burst 6GB); Disk Space 120GB

Super – RAM 5GB (Burst 10GB); Disk Space 120GB

Super150 – RAM 5GB (Burst 10GB); Disk Space 150GB

SuperVPS 2x – RAM 10GB (Burst 20GB); Disk Space 180GB

Servint is also offering a new hosting package – Essential+ which for only $10 more per month than the Essential VPS package, offers 1GB of RAM and more disk space. To avoid confusion with the coming upgrades, the Super125 VPS package will be changed to Super150 to reflect the new upgraded disk space included in this package.

Current Servint VPS customers will receive the upgrade within the next 30 days while new hardware are being installed. To check if your server has already been upgraded, login to your VPS and check the package specifications using /proc/user/beancounters or the “vpsstat” tool. Or you can just wait for the next email notification from Servint when all upgrades have been completed.

JaypeeOnline has been with Servint for almost two years now and I’m a very happy camper. I can’t say that it has been perfect as I’ve had some issues, the worst being the downtime that happened during a routine maintenance procedure. However, the folks at Servint were always quick, polite and very helpful in solving the issues or in answering questions and inquiries I send their way. One more thing, they have very knowledgeable technicians. Servint have several levels/tiers of technicians so support tickets are forwarded to higher level technicians if the lower level ones can’t fix it.

Need a good and reliable VPS or Dedicated Server provider? href="http://www.zoso.ro/">Zoso.ro allegedly received an email recently from his web host Dreamhost ordering him to block Googlebot from his sites that have high traffic as it was causing heavy load on the webserver.

Here’s the alleged email sent by Dreamhost:

This email is to inform you that a few of your sites were getting hammered by Google bot. This was causing a heavy load on the webserver, and in turn affecting other customers on your shared server. In order to maintain stability on the webserver, I was forced to block Google bot via the .htaccess file.

[Limit GET HEAD POST
order allow,deny
deny from 66.249
allow from all]

You also want to consider making your files be unsearchable by robots and crawlers, as that usually contributes to high number of hits. If they hit a dynamic file, like php, it can cause high memory usage and consequently high load…

I moved to Dreamhost just over a month now and so far I haven’t encountered any hosting problems related to Googlebot nor have I received any emails like the one above. It could probably be because my blog doesn’t have much site traffic. Googlebot is known to take up an enormous amount of bandwidth causing websites to exceed their bandwidth limit and be taken down temporarily. I guess a part of this story is true, that some of the sites involved did cause a heavy load on the shared server due to site traffic and Googlebot activity.

I’m not sure about this but it seems to be an unlikely move by an established web hosting company such as Dreamhost. I’m thinking that this is just a hoax and I haven’t confirmed if this story is true or not. But if it were true, it would definitely affect the image of Dreamhost and the confidence of current and future customers.

Hopefully someone from Dreamhost gets to read this and can give an explanation or confirm if this story is true or not. I’ll update this post as soon as I confirm the validity of this story.

interview with Blog-O-Rama that one of my goals was to have paid hosting for JaypeeOnline and now it’s become a reality. Yes, I finally have my own paid web hosting with Dreamhost. (thanks Jim!)

I signed-up last Friday but I was too busy and didn’t have time to do it. So if you noticed any downtime earlier, that because I was setting up my account, moving all my files and restoring my backups and finished around 1 AM Sunday morning. I supposed to finish this entry and publish it but I was so sleepy. The transition went well and I didn’t have any problems restoring my backups. The only thing that caused delay was me trying to get used to Dreamhost’s user panel. It’s totally different from Cpanel of which I’ve been using for a long time.

I’d also like to thank the guys at IGB for hosting my blog totally free for several years. You’ve been a great help to me and for JaypeeOnline.Net and I will never forget your kindness and hospitality.

Other Updates:

First update: When WordPress 2.1.3 was released, I wasn’t able to upgrade my installation right away because I was more worried about the problems I was experiencing within my blog. The only time I was able to upgrade was when I moved to Dreamhost. It was also easy coz they have a One-Click install section where you get to choose different programs like WordPress, Joomla, phpBB and have it installed for you with just one click of a button. All I had to do was upload my custom files and restore my database using phpMyAdmin.

Second update: I installed a plugin called Edit Comment created by Andrew Sutherland. What it does is that it enables blog readers to edit their comments within a specified time limit. This is useful because there are times when readers want to change or add something to their comment or sometimes correct a misspelt word and couldn’t do it because they’ve already hit the submit button. I know how it is coz I’ve experienced it a lot of times myself while leaving comments on other blogs. I’ve configured the plugin to let readers edit their comments within 30 minutes. Please let me know if it doesn’t work or if you experience problems with this feature.

Third update: I’m slowly switching to Gmail. If I frequently visit your blogs, you might notice that I’m using a new email address. I now use one of my Gmail accounts as my primary email account for blogging and for personal use. One of the main reasons why I made the switch is because of the POP access which I couldn’t do with Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail without using a third-party program. With Gmail, I can download email on my desktop using Thunderbird or in my Pocket PC. I’ll still be using my Yahoo! accounts but only for backup purposes and other subscription details.
<div
