OnlineSchools.org created the History of Social Networking Infographic to visually share the rich 30-year history of social networking. Aside from the different facts and figures, it also includes some trivia or fun facts like the first e-mail ever sent contained the message “QWERTYUIOP” or Usenet was the birthplace of flame wars and trolling or that the first version of Myspace was coded only in 10 days. For some these information is old news but for some it’s completely new. Nevertheless I hope you guys enjoy it.

Although I’m on Gowalla and Foursquare, I haven’t enabled and I don’t use the geolocation feature on Twitter. For those of you who have, I’m positive that you’ll be interested with this web-based Twitter client that I’m featuring today. Its called Streamd.in, a simple web-based Twitter client that’s paired with Google Maps that lets you see what’s happening around you, let others know what you’re doing or broadcast your thoughts and location via live video.

Streamd.in is a project headed by Derek Punsalan working together with Raul Raja, Justin Elsberry, Nick Elsberry and Edward Suh. The original plan for Streamd.in was to display Twitter updates from around the world on a Google Map but it eventually became a web-based Twitter client paired with Google Maps.

• View updates originating from a specific location in the world
• Create, reply, retweet, view user profiles or follow / unfollow users
• Manually set a specific location with each message or remain hidden

Although Streamd.in presently only focuses on Twitter content, developers say that future plans include adding updates from Foursquare, Brightkite and Flickr.

Being a Twitter client, you can do almost everything – post updates, view the timeline, mentions, direct messages, favorites and retweets on Streamd.in. Only thing you can’t do right now is access your lists. The live streaming video feature on Streamd.in is made possible by TokBox.

Recently, WIRED Magazine released their own guide pyramid but not for food groups or categories but instead a guide on how we can achieve a balanced media diet.

Practicing good nutrition keeps your mind sharp, your body fit, and your life long. The same could be said for consuming media. (Seriously, knowledge is power.) When you add it all up, the average American spends roughly nine hours a day glued to some kind of screen, and like your diet, quality is as important as quantity. Here are Wired’s suggested servings for optimal media health.

Based on the percentages showed in the pyramid, I can say that my media diet is quite balanced although I spend more than 9 hours a day. Btw, I think this media diet pyramid would look neat in a tshirt.

Packt is pleased to reveal that WordPress is the first winner of the 2007 Open Source CMS Award, picking up the best Open Source Social Networking Content Management System. In a very close category, WordPress came out in front of Elgg and Drupal, who finished joint second.

Packt [packed], a publishing company that produces cutting-edge books for communities, developers, administrators and newbies started the Packt Open Source Content Management System Awards in 2006 as a way to encourage, support and recognize Open Source Content Management Systems. This year, aside from increasing the prize money they’ve also added several new categories including the award that WordPress won.

In what is one of the new categories for 2007, the Open Source Social Networking CMS Award was designed to recognise Content Management Systems that promoted the collaboration and distribution of information and development of communities. The Judges commented on WordPress’s ease of configuration, professional approach, usability and enthusiastic community.

Congratulations to Matt Mullenweg and the rest of the guys at Automattic! Of course this won’t be possible without the programmers, plugin authors, theme designers for their respective contributions to the development of WordPress and the rest of the community who have been supporting WordPress through the years.

Trig is a new social networking site. Although Trig is still in it’s Beta version, it has a lot of potential to compete with Myspace or Friendster. Trig is powered by Ruby on Rails which means that you’ll see a lot of visual effects that use AJAX.

When you sign up, you get to choose what type of profile to create. If you’re an ordinary user, you can create a People profile and if you’re a recording artist or group you can create a Music profile. Profile customization is not yet available but for now, there are 12 skins that you can choose from. You can post a biography, start your own blog, upload photos and display them in your gallery and add tags (kinda like Technorati tags) to make searching things easy for you and other users. You can add tags to your blog, photos and videos.

You can also browse for user shoutouts, music, newly uploaded songs and images, newly posted blogs and tags. One cool feature that I like is the Timeline Content Browser. It lets you search and view the most popular blogs, images, songs and profiles in Trig during a time range that you specify. It’s cool coz you like get to see what stuff was popular 3 months ago in Trig.

I already signed up and inspite that it’s still in it’s Beta phase I like what I see. I believe it has what it takes to take on Myspace. I can’t wait til the guys from Trig are all done with it. If you’re already with Trig, add me up if you want: http://trig.com/jaypee
