Hi there! Welcome to the 135th edition of the Weekend Roundup. I know that it’s very late but I didn’t want to skip and miss publishing this week’s edition. I didn’t have any intentions of neglecting this weekly feature but part of the reason why I’ve been publishing these articles late is that the past few weekends has been very busy and full of activities. Last weekend being the most busy of them all. Been busy with a lot of personal stuff including trying to fix my wife’s Asus Eee 1005HAB.

Hi everyone! Hope you’re all doing fine. My apologies for not being able to publish a Weekend Roundup last week. This week’s edition is a bit late because of the long weekend, being Labor Day Weekend (Sept 6th was Labor Day here in the US). Had a fun, long weekend spent with family and friends. The weekend’s highlight was driving to Thousand Oaks to attend a friend’s daughter’s birthday party. It was a long drive but it was well worth it because we had fun chatting and hanging out with friends and last but not least, the food was great.

BlackBerry Torch 9800

With the HTC Evo, Samsung Galaxy S (AT&T Captivate/T-Mobile Vibrant) and Apple iPhone 4 out in the market, RIM’s (Research In Motion) response and move to keep them in the smartphone game is the release of the BlackBerry Torch 9800.

Aside from the new interface, new Web browser and a number of new apps, what makes the Torch unique is that its the first and only BlackBerry to offer both a touch screen and slide-out keyboard. These features gives the user the option to choose between a physical keyboard or a virtual keypad, making it an ideal choice for users who type a lot – chatting or sending email or text messages all day. Initial reviews from all over the Internet all point out that the BlackBerry Torch 9800 is the best smartphone BlackBerry has ever produced to date. However, it seems being the best BlackBerry smartphone won’t be enough to beat the iPhone and other top smartphones or even capable of winning over iPhone users or users of some of the best Android-powered smartphones.

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 will be available here in the US via AT&T on August 12th and will retail for $199 with a two-year contract.

Toshiba TG01 – Uber Smartphone

A couple days ago, Toshiba officially introduced the Toshiba TG01 smartphone. This mobile internet device looks like something that is geared to compete with the popular Apple iPhone 3G and Android powered G1. The Toshiba TG01 is only 9.9 mm thick but it boasts a 4.1″ WVGA full touch screen display (800 x 480 pixels). It runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 and comes with Internet Explorer Mobile 6 (full support for Flash). The Toshiba TG01 is the first device in the world to run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform (1GHz mobile CPU).

Toshiba TG01′s internal memory is only 512 MB but has a microSD card slot that supports up to 32 GB. It has support for DivX videos and unlike other WinMo powered devices, the TG01 doesn’t use RealPlayer as the default multimedia player but instead it uses CorePlayer which is considered the best mobile multimedia player around.

Below is the official video released by Toshiba. It gives us a closer look at the Toshiba TG01′s features including the custom 3D GUI and the on-screen keyboard.

The Toshiba TG01 comes in two colors – black and white and as always, our European friends will be the first to get their hands on it this summer. So far no word regarding which operator/carrier gets it or how much it will be sold. I hope they’ll also release it here in the US or North America.

Based on the photos, videos and specifications I can say that I’m very impressed with the Toshiba TG01 except for one thing, the striped custom Toshiba 3D GUI which I think is ugly. But overall, the Toshiba TG01 is a slim and sexy mobile device that packs a punch.
