Evolution of Computer Languages [Infographic]

In college, although my major was in Information Systems not Computer Science, my program required me to take a few computer programming classes where I learned the basics of Visual C++, Java, Javascript and PHP. I remember me and a couple of my friends in the same program also had to take a class in Assembly language together with the Computer Engineering students. Boy, was that an ordeal! We were just glad to be able to pass that subject. Hehe

For me the most interesting computer language to learn is PHP but unfortunately, we only had a short period of time to learn it. Anyways, talking about computer languages or programming languages, let us go back down memory lane with an infographic created by the folks of Rackspace about the Evolution of Computer Languages. There are hundreds of computer languages or programming languages but this infographic features the ones that are the most popular and widely.

All the cloud applications you use on the Internet today are written in a specific computer language. What you see as a nice icon on the front end looks like a bunch of code on the back end. It’s interesting to see where computer languages started and how they have evolved over time. There are now a series of computer languages to choose from and billions lines of code. Tweet Nest – Browsable, Searchable & Customizable Twitter Archive

I’m not sure if you still remember Like it? Tweet it!, but it’s a widget I blogged about a few months back that lets blog or website visitors share online content to Twitter with customized messages. Anyways, the author of the Like it? Tweet it! widget – Andy Graulund, has come up with a new cool project that I’m sure many Twitter users would love. It’s called Tweet Nest – a browsable, searchable and easily customizable archive and backup for all your tweets.

Features:

Archive – use Tweet Nest to easily store, browse and search amongst your tweets to find exactly what you’re looking for, and let others do the same. New-style retweets, geographic places and links to original tweets included.
Backup – Tweet Nest serves as a backup of your precious tweets on your own server. Tweets that might grow too old to be retrieved from Twitter.com will not fade out here, allowing you to go back in time as much as possible.
Media – Tweet Nest offers an easier way of viewing your tweets at a glance, as they include thumbnails of media like photos hosted on common providers, such as TwitPic. Additionally, for every month view you get an elegant yet simple bar chart of the amount of tweets, retweets and replies you’ve sent every day.
Customize – Tweet Nest is something you host on your own server, so if you know your web development awesomesauce, you can make your tweet archive your own by easily changing color values in the config file, or even changing the behaviour of the whole thing by changing the stylesheet or some of the other code if you so wish.

Installation notes:

Tweet Nest is programmed in PHP
Requires a MySQL database to work
Tested in LAMP environments (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP)

*may work on other types of servers, but you’ll have to figure that out for yourself.

Minimum requirements:

PHP 5.2 or higher (or 5.1 with the PECL JSON module installed)
MySQL 4.1 or higher

I haven’t tried installing or using Tweet Nest except for the demo provided by the author, but from what I’ve seen I can say that it will be a very useful tool that will benefit active Twitter users. With Tweet Nest, you can save a lot of time and effort searching for a specific tweet that you posted or retweeted in the past.

If you have design skills, you can customize Tweet Nest and create a different style/layout for your Twitter archive. If you have programming skills, you can create extensions (Tweet Nest has rudimentary support for extensions) that will enable Tweet Nest to do other cool stuff.

Dreamhost Upgrades PHP Installations

Yesterday, as I was installing and activating a new WordPress plugin I suddenly got a “Fatal Error” message in my browser window. It was something like this:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 46080 bytes) in …

As soon as I saw that error message, I immediately tried to go back and deactivate the plugin. I tried to access any part of my WordPress Dashboard but to no avail. I kept on getting the fatal error. The next thing I did was to manually delete the plugin folder from wp-content/plugins via FTP. After I deleted the whole plugin folder, I thought that evertything would be okay. When I refreshed my browser and tried opening my WordPress Dashboard, I still got a fatal error but this time it was associated with a different plugin. I did the same thing with the first plugin and deleted the whole plugin folder. Still the same.

After that, I knew that the problem wasn’t with the WordPress plugins. I thought it could be with my WordPress installation. Something must’ve been corrupted or something. The next thing I could do was to re-install WordPress. Before I proceeded with that, I sent a support ticket to Dreamhost. I stated the problem and copied the exact fatal error messages that I got. Then I went on and re-installed WordPress because I didn’t want my blog to be inaccessible while waiting for the response from the support staff.

A few minutes later, when I was done re-installing WordPress, I checked on my Gmail account and found a reply from one of Dreamhost’s support staff. It turns out that Dreamhost has been slowly upgrading the PHP installation for each web server and I wasn’t notified because they didn’t issue any warnings or notification to avoid confusion. I thought that re-installing WordPress would solve the problem but actually, the issue was fixed after the support guy manually updated my PHP.

So what did I learn from this experience? The next time I get any type of errors on my blog that I’m sure aren’t caused by WordPress, I’m gonna send a support ticket and wait for the reply before doing anything like re-installing my WordPress installation. Hehe :D
