Hello everyone! Welcome to another edition of the Weekend Roundup. Had a very good and productive week last week and hope to continue that this coming week. I already have a lineup of cool and interesting articles to publish. Weekend Roundup #95

Good day folks! Beautiful day today even though its quite hot. Hope you had a good weekend and hope you’ll have a good week ahead. Spent the weekend mostly at home and spending quality time with my family. On a sad note, I’d like to extend my sincerest and heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of the recent hostage crisis in the Philippines. I know it would be easy to blame and point fingers on who’s fault it was but that’s not gonna help or change anything. I just hope that the new President and the Philippine government would learn something from this and actually DO something about it as to avoid this from happening again. Also, I hope that other countries, especially China and Hong Kong would consider their travel bans to the Philippines. This is a lone incident, committed by a lone individual not an organized crime syndicate, rebels or terrorists. This was a rare incident that unfortunately happened to a group of tourists visiting the Philippines.

Asus Eee 1005HAB

Got an Asus Eee PC (netbook) from BestBuy two weeks ago. No, this is not mine but rather my wife’s new “toy”. Previously, she was using my old laptop – the Compaq Presario C714NR but decided to give it to her sister who needed it. The Toshiba Satellite A305-S6872 is my work machine and sharing it would be difficult so we decided to get my wife a new machine. Since she only needs a computer for checking her email, checking her Facebook account, surfing the web and watching YouTube videos, a netbook would be enough. Found one online on BestBuy, an Asus Eee PC 1005HAB on sale for $329. Paid for expedited shipping and got it within 3 days.

Basic Specifications:

Intel® Atom™ processor N270 (533MHz system bus, 512KB L2 cache and 1.6GHz).
1GB DDR2 memory (expandable to 2GB).
10.1″ WXGA LED-backlit widescreen display (1024×600 resolution).
160GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 rpm)
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Windows XP SP3 Home Edition
Built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam
3-in-1 digital media reader
3 high-speed USB 2.0 ports
Built-in high-speed wireless LAN (802.11b/g/n)
Built-in 10/100 Mbps fast Ethernet LAN with RJ-45 connector
2.4 lbs. and 1.4″

As the in-house desktop support, I had the privilege of playing with it first. The Asus Eee 1005HAB didn’t have much bloatware installed so it took me only a few minutes to install the necessary programs like antivirus, web browser, media player, etc., update Windows and configure other settings. I also replaced the default blue Windows color scheme/theme to a black theme which looks much better and makes the desktop look nicer. Finding and connecting to my WiFi network was a breeze with the Asus Eee 1005HAB.

The Asus Eee 1005HAB comes with 1GB of RAM installed and is enough to run Windows XP but I do plan to upgrade it to 2GB as soon as I order some from Newegg. The WXGA LED-backlight widescreen display is clear and crisp and displayed DVD-quality videos very well. Other features I love on the Asus Eee 1005HAB are the 3 USB ports (love that it has 3 USB ports and love the location of the ports), the 3-in-1 media card reader and the 6-cell lithium-ion battery that can last up to 8 hours.

There were several models that had a bigger hard drive space (250 GB) but had Windows 7 Starter Edition installed so I opted for the one with Windows XP. For those who aren’t familiar, the Windows 7 Starter Edition is very limited – only allows 3 applications running at the same time and you can’t even replace the wallpaper. I regret not getting the $30 WIndows 7 Home Edition upgrade last month.

The only cons with the Asus Eee 1005HAB? The glossy finish around the display/keyboard and the hand rest area are fingerprint magnets and takes extra effort to remove. The other one is that the keyboards are a bit loose and feel kinda cheap. However, these are very minor flaws. Overall, I’m really impressed and I don’t regret purchasing the Asus Eee 1005HAB.

Nokia Booklet 3G Mini Laptop

While most of us were speculating and anxiously anticipating the arrival of the Apple touchscreen netbook, Nokia caught everybody by surprise when they released the Nokia Booklet 3G mini laptop yesterday. It was so unexpected that popular tech blog Engadget even calls the release the “stunner of the century”.

So why did Nokia come up with the Booklet 3G and decide to enter the netbook/umpc market? Here’s what Nokia’s Executive Vice President for Devices, Kai Oistamo has to say:

“A growing number of people want the computing power of a PC with the full benefits of mobility. We are in the business of connecting people and the Nokia Booklet 3G is a natural evolution for us. Nokia has a long and rich heritage in mobility and with the outstanding battery life, premium design and all day, always on connectivity, we will create something quite compelling. In doing so we will make the personal computer more social, more helpful and more personal.”

If the promo video got you on the edge of your seats and the photos made you excited, wait til you hear what’s under the hood of this landmark product from Nokia. The Nokia Booklet 3G comes with a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor, 120 GB HDD, integrated wireless 3G, a swappable SIM card, A-GPS with Ovi maps, Bluetooth and WiFi. Other features are an aluminum body weighing 2.7lbs, a height of 2cm (.78 inch), built-in camera, a 10.1″ HD display and a HDMI port for HD video out. It will be a Windows-based machine and get this, the Nokia Booklet 3G boasts a 12-hour battery life!

There’s no information regarding the shipping date and the suggested retail price for the Nokia Booklet 3G yet, but expect that information and more details about this new device during the Nokia World 09 event happening next week, September 2nd in Stuttgart, Germany.

Weekend Roundup #44

Another busy weekend for me as I had to prepare the program and other stuff for the children’s activity we had at our church yesterday. Then earlier today, we had to attend another program that was related to yesterday’s activity but this time we had to drive to a different place where the activity was being held. Aside from that, if some of you have noticed JaypeeOnline was down for several hours today because of some technical problems which I will discuss in my next post.
