Yes folks, the Weekend Roundup is back! It’s been eight months since I last published the last roundup. I never intended to stop this weekly feature but the busy schedule, problems with my old laptop and a little bit of laziness on my part kept me from posting another Weekend Roundup. Well, I’m trying to revive it again and hopefully I can continue this every week. I’d also like to know from you, my regular readers whether I should continue this weekly feature or not.

Without further ado, here’s this week’s roundup of news and interesting stuff from around the web and blogosphere.

• What’s wrong with blog flipping? Rocky of TheWeblogZone, talks about the latest trend in the blogosphere called blog flipping.
• Speckyboy has painstakingly collected over a 100 links of WordPress video tutorials. These videos range from basic to advanced tutorials, like how to install WordPress, upgrading WordPress or how to create a WordPress widget or plugin.
• Having a hard time choosing a blogging niche? Mike Smith shares his list of 50 Passion filled blog niches YOU should be dominating.
• Here’s an interesting post by Nathan Rice on Daily Blog Tips. It talks about the difference between Twitter followers versus RSS subscribers.

Technology

• The first ever in-flight WiFi service to be offered by Virgin America will be opened for beta testing on Monday, Nov 24th. It’s scheduled for commercial release this coming December 1st.
• GotGame released Rogue the first game integrated web browser. Now you can surf and browse the web while playing your favorite games. via TechCrunch
• Future of photography? Japanese designer Mac Funamizu’s hands-on photography concept lets you take pictures just by holding up your hands, forming two L shapes (compose shot) and winking your left eye to take the shot. Isn’t that cool?
• Sad but true. Teen broadcasts suicide live on Justin.tv while viewers watched and encouraged him.

Gadgets

• Engadget has a hands-on review of the recently released and highly anticipated BlackBerry phone, the BlackBerry Storm.
• Can your cellphone do this? Motorola RAZR takes bullet and saves a man’s life.
• Gizmodo has a quick review on the latest Sony Viao LV All-In-One PC. Looks pretty to me.
• T3 reports about two open source gaming consoles that might come out early next year.

Pinoy Blogs

• Google and HTC’s first Android-powered phone, the G1 was recently launched in the Philippines. If you’re in the Philippines and interested to get one, you might wanna read the in-depth, hands-on review of the G1 Google Android phone by Abe Olandres.
• Wanna have a chance to win an HP 2133 Mini Notebook with Smart Bro? My friend Jhay has the details.
• In case you haven’t heard, Gmail just recently launched Themes. You can find it under Settings. So what’s your favorite theme?
• Jayvee Fernandez shares an weather animation easter egg found in the HTC Touch HD.

A few hours ago, the guys at Gizmodo posted a confession about a nasty prank they played in this year’s CES at Las Vegas. Armed with TV-B-Gone clickers, Gizmodo bloggers went around and started shutting off TV displays of different company exhibits or booths, even turning off a whole wall of TVs. The nastiest part was interfering with Motorola representatives while doing their presentation.

I laughed while watching the video but it didn’t feel quite right. It’s funny but in a wrong way. Thinking about it, Gizmodo’s bloggers actions were not appropriate. They could have done it once and stopped but they didn’t. Their explanation was “we pretty much couldn’t help ourselves“. Some people are saying that Gizmodo should be banned at CES, the upcoming MacWorld Expo and in other tradeshows. Bloggers on the other hand are concerned that they too would be banned or not invited because of Gizmodo’s actions.

Tech execs say the darndest things. And so do shuffling presidents, and disgraced scientists, and Wikipedia fakers. It’s time to relive 2005′s biggest spoken gaffes.

“Screw the nano.”
– Motorola CEO Ed Zander

Cell-phone makers hoping to break into the music business got little traction in 2005 in the face of Apple Computer’s iPod dynasty. The shortcoming was made all the more glaring for Motorola, when its Rokr iTunes phone debuted alongside Apple’s newest entry, the iPod nano. (Motorola later issued a press release saying Zander’s statement was a “joke.”)

“I’m going to f***ing bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I’m going to f***ing kill Google.”
– Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, in statements attributed to him in court documents by former Microsoft engineer and recent Google hire Mark Lucovsky

The accusations flew fast and furiously in a high-stakes court battle between Microsoft and Google over alleged employee poaching. Drama aside, the case highlighted a tectonic power shift in the technology industry brought on by post-IPO Google.

The most embarrassing executive antics of the year came early in 2005, as a tone-deaf, stiff white guy stepped up to the stage at the Consumer Electronics Show and joined Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler in a duet. Silicon.com has the video.

The music giant responds in an NPR interview to complaints that anti-copying technology on some of its CDs creates serious security vulnerabilities in computers.

This zinger deflects criticism when a reporter with an accent asks why Intel is so far behind Advanced Micro Devices on a dual-core server chip. After the laughter subsides, AMD continues to assault Intel’s leadership position.

The cloning pioneer initially denies accusations that he broke ethical guidelines in conducting stem-cell research, but eventually admits he lied to protect co-workers. Later, he withdraws a groundbreaking research paper amid accusations of falsified data.

At his $11 billion telco fraud trial, Ebbers tries to pin the debacle on ex-WorldCom CFO and state’s witness Scott Sullivan. The jury is not convinced, and Ebbers is convicted of conspiracy, securities fraud and false regulatory filings on all counts. An appeal is pending.

Brit Hume interviews the president about his iPod on Fox News, as recorded in a hilarious transcript published by The Washington Post.

A false post linking journalist John Seigenthaler Sr. with the Kennedy assassinations spilled over into public debate over the merits and failings of Wikipedia, a publicly maintained database of encyclopedia listings open to all comers. The controversy ends with an anticlimactic apology, but raises tough questions about the reliability of a new brand of participatory media, loosely dubbed “Web 2.0.”

At a press conference in Sri Lanka, the head of the world’s biggest chipmaker disses a plan by Nicholas Negroponte to give the world’s poorest children affordable computers.
