Belated Happy 20th Birthday, Linux!

Do you use Linux or other Linux-based operating systems and distributions like Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Red Hat, Gentoo, openSUSE, etc.? I’ve been using Ubuntu the past few years and I love it. Aside from being free & open source and a very good alternative operating system for Windows, I like how it is fast and virtually free from computer viruses.

We have Linux today, thanks to a Swedish software engineer named Linus Torvalds. Most Linux users already know this but for the sake of those who don’t, it was first released twenty years ago, on August 25, 1991. It was on that day that Linus Torvalds shared the operating system he was working on as a hobby for Minix (a UNIX Operating System) users on the UseNet newsgroup ‘comp.os.minix‘ and as the saying goes – the rest is history.

Hello everybody out there using minix -
I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I’d like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things).
I’ve currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that I’ll get something practical within a few months, and I’d like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won’t promise I’ll implement them :-)

PS. Yes – it’s free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT portable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that’s all I have :-(.

Tweet Nest – Browsable, Searchable & Customizable Twitter Archive

I’m not sure if you still remember Like it? Tweet it!, but it’s a widget I blogged about a few months back that lets blog or website visitors share online content to Twitter with customized messages. Anyways, the author of the Like it? Tweet it! widget – Andy Graulund, has come up with a new cool project that I’m sure many Twitter users would love. It’s called Tweet Nest – a browsable, searchable and easily customizable archive and backup for all your tweets.

Features:

Archive – use Tweet Nest to easily store, browse and search amongst your tweets to find exactly what you’re looking for, and let others do the same. New-style retweets, geographic places and links to original tweets included.
Backup – Tweet Nest serves as a backup of your precious tweets on your own server. Tweets that might grow too old to be retrieved from Twitter.com will not fade out here, allowing you to go back in time as much as possible.
Media – Tweet Nest offers an easier way of viewing your tweets at a glance, as they include thumbnails of media like photos hosted on common providers, such as TwitPic. Additionally, for every month view you get an elegant yet simple bar chart of the amount of tweets, retweets and replies you’ve sent every day.
Customize – Tweet Nest is something you host on your own server, so if you know your web development awesomesauce, you can make your tweet archive your own by easily changing color values in the config file, or even changing the behaviour of the whole thing by changing the stylesheet or some of the other code if you so wish.

Installation notes:

Tweet Nest is programmed in PHP
Requires a MySQL database to work
Tested in LAMP environments (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP)

Minimum requirements:

PHP 5.2 or higher (or 5.1 with the PECL JSON module installed)
MySQL 4.1 or higher

I haven’t tried installing or using Tweet Nest except for the demo provided by the author, but from what I’ve seen I can say that it will be a very useful tool that will benefit active Twitter users. With Tweet Nest, you can save a lot of time and effort searching for a specific tweet that you posted or retweeted in the past.

If you have design skills, you can customize Tweet Nest and create a different style/layout for your Twitter archive. If you have programming skills, you can create extensions (Tweet Nest has rudimentary support for extensions) that will enable Tweet Nest to do other cool stuff.

India Unveils $35 Tablet PC

India recently unveiled a prototype of a $35 touchscreen tablet computer which they plan to mass produce next year. The total cost? $35. The tablet pc will run on Linux, has no internal storage but can store data via memory card. It also has a built-in word processor, video conferencing capabilities, a web browser and last but not least, it can also run on solar power.

Running Linux and using external memory (memory card) enabled the developers to keep the price low. The total cost to build this touchscreen tablet computer including the motherboard, memory, display, etc is around $35 but the Indian government plans to subsidize the cost of these tablets so students and low-income families can avail of them for only $20. Further plans include dropping the price to $10.

At $35, this tablet pc is much better than the $100 laptop developed by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) for the One Laptop One Child Program. If the Indian government will be successful in producing this tablet pc, it would do a lot of good for the students and low-income families in India. Aside from that, this can also be a source of income for the government if they decide to mass produce it and export it to other countries.

I’m sure it will not only be students or low-income families who will be interested in these type of tablet computers. Business and other organizations would definitely be interested in a touchscreen tablet computer that mobile workers can use for word processing, video conferencing and other cloud-based applications that costs less than 10% of the cost of an Apple iPad.

Weekend Roundup #61

Hi folks! Hope you all had a great weekend and are having a good week so far. My apologies for yet another late edition of the Weekend Roundup. The past weekend was quite busy with church-related programs and meetings. It was also marked by a special boxing event featuring the highly anticipated fight of the year between WBO Welterweight champion Miguel Cotto and Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. Thank goodness for free live stream links, I was able to watch it for free at home without having to pay $60 for HBO’s PPV. I was very nervous at the start of the match and I was expecting Cotto to give Pacquiao a hard time. It was a great fight and congratulations to Manny Pacquiao for winning his 7th world title making him the first fighter to win 7 titles in different weight divisions.

Anyways, enough of that and on with this weeks edition of the Weekend Roundup. Hope you guys enjoy it!

Weekend Roundup #42

Hi guys! Hope everyone’s doing good. I know the folks in the Philippines are enjoying a long weekend as Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) which is a national holiday celebrated every 9th of April was moved to Monday, April 6th. My weekend was okay although we weren’t able to go to church because my son didn’t feel well and vomited in the car so we ended up going home. Saturday night, I got to spend time with family and meet my aunt, uncle and cousin who came from Germany. Sunday, we had to drive to Los Angeles to see our lawyer thats why I wasn’t able to publish this post earlier. Anyways, hope you guys enjoy this edition of the Weekend Roundup!
