Wi-Fi Direct: Bluetooth Killer?

The Wi-Fi Alliance has recently launched a new technology called Wi-Fi Direct that will enable electronic devices and gadgets to communicate and connect to each other without the need of a network or network access point. The Wi-Fi Alliance have started certifying the first batch of gadgets with the new Wi-Fi Direct technology a couple days back. With this new technology, users can now do things like share photos with their digital cameras or play video games on their game consoles/mobile devices with their friends without a wireless hotspot or Internet connection.

Edgar Figueroa, Wi-Fi Aliance CEO brief statement on the new Wi-Fi Direct technology:

“We designed Wi-Fi Direct to unleash a wide variety of applications which require device connections, but do not need the Internet or even a traditional network.”..”Wi-Fi Direct empowers users to connect devices — when, where and how they want to — and our certification program delivers products that work well together, regardless of the brand.”

The Wi-Fi Direct protocol is similar with regular Wi-Fi but different in some ways because first it doesn’t require a network or network access point. Also with this new protocol, users can browse nearby Wi-Fi Direct enabled devices and connect to them with just a push of a button and have the connection automatically encrypted.

802.11n devices certified with the Wi-Fi Direct technology will be backwards compatible with existing Wi-Fi enabled devices that are no available in the market. Atheros, Broadcom, Intel, Realtek and Ralink will be producing the first line of Wi-Fi Direct certified products and are expected to be in the market in time for the holidays.

WIth the introduction of Wi-Fi Direct, it can’t be helped that there are many speculations that this new technology/protocol would surpass or kill Bluetooth because it has a wider range and faster speed. However, there are certain issues in the Wi-Fi protocol like the use of a single channel, interference and Wi-Fi Direct being a software-only protocol that could prevent it from doing so. Weekend Roundup #85

Good day to everyone! Hope you all had a good weekend. The past weekend was quite busy for me. Been occupied with personal stuff and spent most of my time at home. I also wasn’t able to play basketball yesterday so I’ll have to find a way to play, hopefully on Friday. Talking about basketball, can’t wait for the NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics. The greatest rivalry in the NBA will be renewed on Thursday. You all know who I’m rooting for and I really hope the Lakers win not only to get another championship but to avenge their loss to the Celtics in the 2008 Finals. Lakers in 6?

Weekend Roundup #66

Hi folks! How are you all doing? How was your weekend? Me, I had a great weekend! My favorite NFL team – the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 34-14 last Saturday night, finally ending a looong playoff drought. The last time they won a playoff game was back in Dec. 28, 1996. Next week, they’ll be playing against the Minnesota Vikings. Then my 2 fave NBA teams, the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers both won against the Milwaukee Bucks and Portland Trailblazers respectively. The best part this past weekend was being able to spend quality time with my family, capped off by an impromptu visit to Universal Studios yesterday. I was happy because my son had fun and really enjoyed the visit and having his photos taken with different cartoon characters like Curious George, Dora & Diego, Sponge Bob, Alex the Lion and the Penguins of Madagascar.

Intel MID: Concept Mobile Internet Device

I love gadgets and everytime I see a new piece of technology or new electronic gadget, I can’t help but get excited. While browsing the web the other day, I came across a concept mobile internet device called the Intel MID designed by Jan Rytir. This sexy piece of gadgetry is a mobile internet device that’s specially designed for internet browsing anywhere.

Based on the design, the Intel MID mobile internet device has the following features: 180x80x20mm dimension, full QWERTY keyboard, OLED touchscreen, trackball, 2 USB slots, microphone and audio input, SD card reader, stereo speakers, docking connector and something unique to this device, 7 completely configurable action buttons.

Although the Intel MID is a thing of beauty and a totally different device on its own, I can’t help but see the similarity with the Sony Xperia X1. I’m talking about the curved design of the QWERTY keyboard. Based on the design and physical features/specifications, IMO the Intel MID is way better than the iPhone 4G concept. But then again, both of these gadgets are only concept.

So what do you guys think about the sexy Intel MID concept mobile internet device? What other features/specs would you want to see added to it? If this Intel MID concept would be picked up by one of the big companies like maybe HTC and made into a real product, would you get one? If I could afford it, I definitely would!

How was your weekend? Mine was good, nothing extraordinary but it was kinda special because I got to spend a lot of time with my family. Most weekends we’re busy with church activities, attending a birthday party or wedding or some gathering. Hope everyone had a fun and safe weekend.
