WordPress for BlackBerry 1.5 Now Available

If you use WordPress on your BlackBerry device, you might want to upgrade to the latest version of WordPress BlackBerry 1.5 which was released a couple days back. This new version includes new features like a home screen icon with number of comments in moderation, custom image sizes and discussion settings and is now available in the BlackBerry App World.

Here’s the complete list of new features included in WordPress for BlackBerry 1.5:

Added support forBlavatars (“Blog Avatars”).
Added preview for drafts, scheduled and private posts.
Introduced the home screen icon for comment notifications.
Added a visual indicator that shows the post status in the post list screen.
Added support for Discussion settings (enable/disable comments, pingbacks and Trackbacks).
Categories are now alphabetically sorted.
Added the possibility to specify a resize dimension on each image.
Changed the image resize feature, by adding predefined dimensions loaded from the Blog Media Settings.
Fixed issues on the Permissions settings screen, it now appears once at first startup.
Small UI redesign.

RIM Unveils BlackBerry PlayBook

The much awaited BlackBerry Tablet was unveiled yesterday during RIM’s (Research In Motion) annual BlackBerry Developer Conference in San Francisco, California. CEO Mike Lazardis announced the company’s new product called the BlackBerry PlayBook. The BlackBerry PlayBook will run on an operating system called the BlackBerry Tablet OS that supports OpenGPL, POSIX, Webkit, HTML5, Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Mobile AIR, etc.

The BlackBerry PlayBook will also sport a 7-inch, 1024×600, WSVGA capacitive multitouch display, run on a (Cortex A9-based) dual-core 1GHz CPU and 1GB RAM. Other features include a 3-megapixel front-facing camera, a 5 megapixel rear lens that supports video conferencing, a HDMI port, microUSB jack, Bluetooh 2.1 and 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi. The PlayBook is expected to ship in two models – 16GB and 32GB.

The BlackBerry PlayBook is scheduled to be available in retail outlets here in the United States by early 2011 and international markets by the 2nd quarter of 2011. For now, there’s no information regarding the retail price of the BlackBerry PlayBook. It will be interesting to see how they’re gonna market their new product – whether they’re gonna sell it the same price as the Apple iPad or sell it cheaper to attract more people to buy the PlayBook.

BlackBerry Torch 9800

With the HTC Evo, Samsung Galaxy S (AT&T Captivate/T-Mobile Vibrant) and Apple iPhone 4 out in the market, RIM’s (Research In Motion) response and move to keep them in the smartphone game is the release of the BlackBerry Torch 9800.

Aside from the new interface, new Web browser and a number of new apps, what makes the Torch unique is that its the first and only BlackBerry to offer both a touch screen and slide-out keyboard. Initial reviews from all over the Internet all point out that the BlackBerry Torch 9800 is the best smartphone BlackBerry has ever produced to date. However, it seems being the best BlackBerry smartphone won’t be enough to beat the iPhone and other top smartphones or even capable of winning over iPhone users or users of some of the best Android-powered smartphones.

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 will be available here in the US via AT&T on August 12th and will retail for $199 with a two-year contract.

RIM Releases BlackBerry Protect

Good news for BlackBerry users! Now you don’t have to worry about losing your BlackBerry device or having it stolen even if you have all your personal or business information on it. A few days back, RIM (Research In Motion), developers of the BlackBerry smartphone has released a new security application called BlackBerry Protect.

So what is BlackBerry Protect and what does it do? BlackBerry Protect is a FREE service that provides BlackBerry owners a set of tools that they can use to protect their BlackBerry smartphones in case they lose it or if it gets stolen. Here’s a list of features/options that BlackBerry Protect offers to its users:

Automatically back up data from BlackBerry smartphones
Locate a misplaced BlackBerry smartphone via the Loud Ring Feature
Locate and pinpoint lost/stolen BlackBerry smartphone’s location via cell tower and GPS device tracking
Remotely add contact information on home screen (so person who finds it can return it to owner)
Protect important data on BlackBerry smartphones with Remote wiping or Device lock via a desktop computer
Restore data to a new BlackBerry smartphone

I don’t own a BlackBerry but I know some family members and friends who do and I’m sure many of you also own BlackBerry smartphones, that’s why I’m sharing this new useful application from RIM. Unfortunately, BlackBerry Protect will be launched next week as beta via invite codes and will not be available to the general public. However, RIM has announced that an open public beta will be made available later this year. Btw, this service is only available to customers who aren’t attached to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

I wish Apple would come up with something like this for iPhone users like me. I know all iPhone users would want that, right guys? If Apple does come up with a similar app, I’m pretty sure it would be one of the most popular and most downloaded apps in the App Store.

WordPress for Android

I have the WordPress app installed on my iPhone and although I don’t use it to write and publish blog posts, I like having it because it lets me access my blog and moderate comments when I don’t have my laptop with me. I also keep it there because I might need it one of these days, when I have to publish something quickly like during an emergency.

Previously, the WordPress app was only available for iPhone and BlackBerry users. If you’re a WordPress user who owns a Android-powered device, there’s good news for you! Yesterday, the WordPress dev team officially announced the release of the WordPress for Android app.

Features include:

Configure and manage multiple blogs
Comment moderation including the ability to reply to comments
Create and Edit Posts including categories, tags and photos
Create and Edit Pages
Get notified of new comments in the Android notification bar

For those of you who have been using the wpToGo app for Android, the transition to WordPress for Android would be smooth because the source code used for creating the official WordPress app was taken from wpToGo itself. Users should also take note that the wpToGo app will be discontinued because all efforts will be focused on the development of the Open Source WordPress for Android app.

The WordPress for Android app can be downloaded from the Android Market. Just use your device and visit the Android Market and search for “wordpress“. Make sure that the app you install is published by Automattic, Inc.
