WordCamp Philippines

WordCamp Philippines

If you’re a Pinoy blogger or a WordPress user/fan then most likely you’ve heard or read of this already. But in case you haven’t, I have good news for you. There will be a WordCamp held in the Philippines this coming September 6, 2008. If you don’t know what I’m talking about here’s a little info.

What is WordCamp?

WordCamp is a conference type of event that focuses squarely on everything WordPress. Everyone from casual end users all the way up to core developers show up to these events. These events are usually highlighted by speeches or keynotes by various people. WordCamp is a spin off from the popular BarCamp which was a spin off of FooCamp. - Weblog Tools Collection

WordCamp Philippines will be the first ever WordCamp organized and held in Asia. WordCamp Philippines is being organized by a group of Filipino bloggers based in Mindanao who were also responsible for organizing the successful 1st Mindanao Bloggers Summit held last year.

What are the objectives of WordCamp Philippines?

…to encourage more developers to use and deploy WordPress, not only as a blogging engine but also as a full-featured content management system for Web sites. Another is to increase the number of WordPress users and developers in the country. By developers, we mean programmers of WordPress plugins and designers of themes & templates.

USB Hard Drives

One of the things that I have included in my wishlist is a USB hard drive. The reason why I want a USB hard drive is because I want to have a place to store my mp3s, videos, photos and other stuff. I also need it as a way to backup important files that I have on my desktop and laptop. Having all those files in one place is also more convenient than having them in different CDs, DVDs or other storage media.

Right now, I’m using my laptop which only has 40 GB of hard disk space and that isn’t enough for all the documents and files that I have. For now, I do backups by copying files into rewritable DVDs or CDs. This process is time consuming and costly. Also, a DVD has only 4.7 GB of storage space which is only good for a few movies.

I already know where I’ll buy my USB hard drive and it’s gonna be from Buy.com. However, I still haven’t decided on which USB hard drive to get. I’m still thinking whether I should get one with a 160 GB, 320 GB or 500 GB storage capacity. Of course I would like to get one with the most storage capacity but if it’s beyond my budget, then I’d have to settle for the next best deal.

So, if you’re looking for USB hard drives, I recommend that you try Buy.com. They have the largest selection of USB Hard Drives at very low prices and aside from that, most of the USB hard drives qualify for the free shipping offer. Buy.com has over 2 million products and 8 million customers.

As I’ve learned last year (in a tragic hard drive cash, lol… well, it’s funny now, but not back then), it’s not a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket, as the saying goes.

I have a 3 external hard drives. I like to spread out the stuff in several areas. Even “backups” die… I got so paranoid, I backed up a backup once. Well, it was work-related and extremely crucial to my business at the time.

Firelite harddrives are the bomb and they fit into your pocket too! I have 3 120 GB ones. Love them. One for photos, one for backup of my computer, and one for music.

@Ashley - Thanks for sharing! I’ll try to join your contest. :)

@fruityoaty - Yeah, that’s true. Can’t have all important stuff all in one place that’s why I really want to get an external hard drive. Better safe than sorry is what I always say. Hehe :D

@trench - I’ve seen the Firelite portable hdds and they look really nice and very portable but they’re quite expensive. I need an external hard drive just for backing up stuff and I won’t be bringing them around so it doesn’t matter if it’s big and heavy as long as the storage capacity is big and I can get it for a low price.
