Apple iOS 4 Update Problems

Apple iOS 4 Software Update

As promised, Apple released the much awaited iOS 4 yesterday morning, around 11 AM US Pacific Time. The Apple iOS 4 which will ship with the iPhone 4 on June 24th was released for download a couple days earlier for iPod Touch, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS owners. Multitasking, folders, unified inbox, iBooks, custom playlists, 5x digital zoom, home screen wallpaper, gift apps, spell checking and wireless keyboard are some of the 100 new features included in the Apple iOS 4 update.

With all those cool new features, a lot of iPod Touch and iPhone 3G/3GS users rushed to download and install the iOS 4 update. While most users are happy with the upgrade and didn’t experience any problems, the same isn’t true for others who are reporting several problems and bugs after installing the update. Here are some of the iOS 4 update problems that users have reported to BGR.

Apple iOS 4 Update Problems:

  • Photos synced with iPhoto turn are extremely blurry
  • Update deletes all contacts, and backups will not restore them
  • MMS no longer works
  • Push notifications not functioning
  • Auto-lock is set at one minute and the option to change this is greyed out
  • Update fails and device reboots endlessly

Aside from these problems, a lot of iPod Touch and iPhone users who updated to the latest version are complaining about batteries draining faster after the update. With all these bugs being reported, it seems that the Apple iOS 4 release didn’t go smoothly as planned. According to some users who called Apple support regarding these issues, Apple is well aware of these bugs and that they will have all the bugs fixed by Friday, June 25th. So if you’re experiencing problems with your iOS 4 update or planning on updating, I suggest that you wait until Apple releases a newer version that addresses and fixes all these bugs.

Anyone updated their iPod Touch or iPhone 3G/3GS to iOS 4? Did the update go smoothly or did you also experience the bugs reported by other users? Please share your thoughts.

  1. Alright. This new update. Is the Worst. I lost. Pictures. Contact Info. All the apps (but redownloaded.) Safari is ridiculously pitifully slow. Ontop of that, my dock did not turn into the grey one that the iOS4 looks as. NEITHER. Can my iPod multitask with this update. Like it’s supposed to. I backed up my iPod. And can’t get my songs. It wants me to REPURCHASE all of them. Bogus ass update. Not worth it. iOS3.1 was way more efficient.

  2. Jason Berubesays:

I upgraded my iPhone 3G to iOS 4 and I’m not experiencing to any problem in this post except the battery draining issue. It drains its battery noticeable faster.

  3. Henderson Huihuisays:

I updated my iPod touch 3rd gen and anything that uses the Internet is so slow! I tried restoring it but the software is still 4.0 and it didn’t help at all. I wanna punch Steve jobs.

  4. Thanks for that Andrei, I’ve saved the link. As it happens I ended up going through apple care and they tried restoring the phone to the factory settings but it still didn’t work. It also didn’t work any more in my docking station. They are now going to send me a new 3gs without the upgrade so I should be back to singing along in the car.

  5. @Saira – Please refer to the link Andrei provided. Hope that tutorial helps you to successfully downgrade to iOS 3.1.3 and make your iPhone work with your car stereo again.

@Andrei – Thanks for taking time to share your experience and answering Saira’s question! :)

  6. @Saira – I had the same problems with my car stereo system – something like “The device is not compatible with your phone”. I have successfully downgraded to 3.1.3 using this tutorial The stereo system works fine again. One thing that I found very annoying that it is a little bit more complicated to do downgrade on 64-bit system because of some USB driver that suppose to help on switching the phone from recovery mode the normal one, so I recommend to downgrade using 32-bit.

  7. I upgraded yesterday and no problems with the phone itself but I can’t play it through my car stereo anymore. I only bought the stereo two months ago and paid extra to get one that was compatible with the iphone. I’m extremely annoyed now that I can’t use it for that. Is there any way to get rid of the upgrade and go back to the older version?

  8. @DiTesco – It sure is! Glad I didn’t immediately upgrade to iOS 4. I was very excited about the release but read about the bugs so I decided to put it off. If you purchase the iPhone 4, I don’t think you’ll have to worry about these issues. :D

I’m sure Apple is aware of these issues and are working on fixing them.

  9. Now ain’t that a bummer. Good thing I have not yet purchased my iPhone :) These bugs are not to be taken lightly, they are horrible. Wonder what Apple has to say about them..

  10. @Andrei – I see. Mine’s a 3GS and most of the reported problems are from 3GS units. I can imagine how annoying it is for users who experienced these issues/bugs. Hope you find a way to fix it or revert your iPhone OS back to 3.1. Thanks for dropping by!

  11. I just updated my iPhone 3G to iOS4. Although I haven’t experienced any of the problems described in this post, my GROM iPhone adapter stopped working properly. If before I could switch playlists as disks in virtual external cd-changer, now I can switch just between songs. Very annoying, so I will be looking for some ways of reversing to 3.1

  12. @Glenn – Good for you! You’re one of the “lucky” ones to not have issues after updating to iOS4. As for me, I’m gonna play safe and wait for a newer version that address/fixes these bugs.

Btw, thanks for stopping by and sharing your experience. :)

  13. Upgraded my 3GS yesterday, and haven’t had a single problem so far. Contacts all there, receiving notifications, iPhotos sharp (though they do seem to be down-sampled before transferring to the phone–need to double check some dimensions), auto-lock 5 minutes. The only thing I haven’t tried from the list above is MMS. Never use the stuff. :)
