Arroyo declares State of Emergency

At 11:20 a.m. earlier today, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed Proclamation No. 1017 that declares a State of Emergency. This action invokes Section 18, Article 7 of the Constitution which gives her the authority to use the police and armed forces to prevent any anti-government activities or rebellion.
Quoting the President:
“Ito naman ang babala ko sa mga nagbabalak laban sa bayan, babagsak sa inyong pagtataksil ang buong bigat ng batas [This is my warning to those who plan to grab power, your betrayal will be dealt with under the full force of the law],”
“elements in the political opposition had conspired with authoritarians of the extreme Left represented by the [National Democratic Front-Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army] and the extreme Right, represented by military adventurists — the historic enemies of the democratic Philippine State — who are now in a tactical alliance and engaged in a concerted and systematic conspiracy, over a broad front, to bring down the duly constituted government elected in May 2004.â€
“Claims of these elements had been recklessly magnified by certain segments of the national media.â€
This State of Emergency proclamation also allows police to do warrantless arrests, a ban on rallies and the government taking over utilities and media.

My personal take on this? I believe that no matter who we put in as President, if we as a country do not work together all efforts would be in vain. Also, there should be no opposition. We should support whoever gets elected into office. Period! These politicians should help each other, do something for the good of the nation instead of wasting taxpayer’s money finding fault and fighting with each other.
We haven’t learned from our mistakes in the past. It should start from ourselves, as individuals. Just like what John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you; what you can do for your country”. I believe that if every Filipino bear this in their hearts and apply it, we can achieve great things.

Do we have to deal with this every EDSA anniversary? Sigh
Hay…kasi coup ng coup eh.
I think everything boils down to economics.
Why is Cory rallying every opportunity that she can get? Why? What’s the real reason? OK, I understand it’s the EDSA 1 revolution, but then…what is the real reason talaga?
Well, I found the answer in the news: PDI February 1, 2006, and let me quote it.

THE FAMILY of former president Corazon Aquino has asked the Supreme Court to stop the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) from distributing to farmers its vast sugar estate in the northern Philippines. In a court petition, the Hacienda Luisita Inc. (HLI) questioned the authority of the Presidential Agrarian Reform Council (PARC) to revoke the 16-year-old sharing agreement in the 4,915-hectare farmland of the Cojuangco family in Tarlac province.
And there’s another.
I have always been wondering why the ABS-CBN in its news always portray the country a bad as possible. Why do they treat the Arroyo administration so badly they want it to go down and be replaced by “something”. What’s the real reason ba talaga? Well, I speculated, and I think the reason is obvious. Diba ang Meralco and ABS-CBN are owned by one family? Tama ba ako? Kong tama ako, I think the news will also guide us. Let me quote some part of it.

MANILA Electric Co. (Meralco) proposed to the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Monday a plan to start in November the second phase of its program for refunding customers billions of pesos in overcharges as ordered by the Supreme Court.
The plan covers customers who consume between 101 and 200 kilowatt-hours a month. If approved, it would extend into next year, and cost 2.7 billion pesos.
The first phase of the refund plan, to start on June 3, covers customers using only up to 100 kilowatt-hours a month.

THE ENERGY Regulatory Commission (ERC) said it has ordered the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) to begin implementing the second phase of a 30.5 billion-peso refund to customers by September 1.
The regulatory body wants the refund’s first phase, costing 2.2 to 2.5 billion pesos and covering customers with monthly consumption of no more than 100 kilowatt-hours, to be completed by the end of August.
The second phase, involving consumers using 101 to 300 kwh per month, will cost Meralco around 4.7 billion pesos.
@keren - i know, a real People Power and EDSA revolution can only happen once. these recent ones just create havoc and more problems instead of celebrating the real essence of the EDSA revolution anniversary.
@arn - that’s quite a lengthy one but thanks for sharing it with us. before, i was wondering why Corazon Aquino joined the opposition’s bandwagon. but then i saw one reason i see why she wants to overthrow the current government. it is the same issue you pointed out about Hacienda Luisita. i believe that to be true. their family has a vested interest which they want to keep and protect.
i have to agree w/ u.. there really should be no opposition.. these people behind all these coup are just making things worse.. i hope eveyone could jz set aside their personal interests and help our country. kahit cnung presidente ilagay ng mga pilipino hndi uunlad ang bansa kung lahat gs2 lumagay sa pwesto na yan.. no doubt every filipino wants to leave the phils.. nkakasawa na kc yang gnyang news..
btw, thanks 4 droppin by my site.. ill link u up if its ok w/ u.. cheers
Sa tingin ko ok lang yong ginawa ni GMA, matitigas talaga ulo ng pinoy, kahit sino nga umupo sa pwesto hindi maaayos ang bansa dahil sa political system natin. Everybody has their own agenda, everybody wants to be in power.
looks pretty serious man. Its a big issue on Guam since the population here is almost 35% filipino.
yeah, it is serious. i thought it would end up with another president being ousted or bloodshed or the military taking over. it was unpredictable. you can’t do anything except watch the news, then wait and see what happens.
