WordCamp Philippines

WordCamp Philippines

If you’re a Pinoy blogger or a WordPress user/fan then most likely you’ve heard or read of this already. But in case you haven’t, I have good news for you. There will be a WordCamp held in the Philippines this coming September 6, 2008. If you don’t know what I’m talking about here’s a little info.

What is WordCamp?

WordCamp is a conference type of event that focuses squarely on everything WordPress. Everyone from casual end users all the way up to core developers show up to these events. These events are usually highlighted by speeches or keynotes by various people. WordCamp is a spin off from the popular BarCamp which was a spin off of FooCamp. - Weblog Tools Collection

WordCamp Philippines will be the first ever WordCamp organized and held in Asia. WordCamp Philippines is being organized by a group of Filipino bloggers based in Mindanao who were also responsible for organizing the successful 1st Mindanao Bloggers Summit held last year.

What are the objectives of WordCamp Philippines?

…to encourage more developers to use and deploy WordPress, not only as a blogging engine but also as a full-featured content management system for Web sites. Another is to increase the number of WordPress users and developers in the country. By developers, we mean programmers of WordPress plugins and designers of themes & templates.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Me

First I got tagged by Trench about a month ago and now Karla has also tagged me with the same Meme. So here goes, 5 things that you don’t or didn’t know about me.

1. I dreamed of becoming an air force pilot or soldier.

When I was a kid, I dreamed of becoming an air force pilot or soldier. I loved playing with toy guns. I also cut out pictures of fighter planes, tanks, soldiers and any war related photo from our magazines at home and any magazine I can get my hands on. I think part of this is still in me coz I like playing PC games like Counterstrike.

2. I won 3rd place in an art contest when I was 5 years old.

Actually, I’m not really sure if it was 5 or 6 years old. Anyways, I took this art class every Sunday and at the end of the program, the art teacher held a contest for all participants. It was an open category, so artworks included pieces from advanced painters who joined the class. Because of that, I didn’t expect to win at all. But lo and behold, I got 3rd place! I was so happy. I still remember the piece that I made, it was a flower on a pot. I just can’t remember exactly what kind of flower it was. Too bad I didn’t keep that painting to show to my kid. Hehe

3. I auditioned for TV commercials twice.

Actually it was only because of a family friend that I went and did it. Her kids did tv commercials and she knew several agents and agencies. She called them and set the appointments for me. I’m a shy type of person and I would normally won’t do this type of thing on my own.

The first time I auditioned, I went with my dad. They make you stand in front of the camera, say your name, age, hobbies, etc. Then they let you hold a bottle and pretend to say something good about it like you’re promoting it. I was so nervous. At that time, the agency was also looking for a man in his forty’s for a cellphone commercial so the agent asked my dad to also do a taping. Guess what? My dad got the part! LOL Unfortunately, the day the agency called him to come over, my dad was sick with the flu.

The second time around, I went with my cousin. This time it was with a bigger talent agency. I still remember their office was at the Rufino Tower, in Makati. I remember Dino Guevarra was also there to audition. But that time he was not yet that famous. Another guys who was there was the winner of a tv show contest called “Mr. Pogi” (Mr. Handsome). Hehe

I didn’t get casted for any TV commercial but it was a good experience.

4. I can’t sleep without Vick’s Vaporub.

It started when I was in Manila, during gradeschool. When it was hot at night, we had to use an electric fan. You can’t just open the window coz of burglars and the pollution. Electric fans make my nose stuffy and makes it hard to breath. So my remedy was to use Vick’s Vaporub. After a prolonged use of it, there were times when I used it even when I didn’t have stuffy nose and I couldn’t sleep without it. Right now, I can sleep without it but there are still times when I use it even if I don’t have the stuffy nose.

5. I graduated from high school without the required term papers.

This is one of my best kept secrets. I’ve only told a few people about this and I never told my classmates. I didn’t want them to get mad or feel cheated coz they had to do their term papers.

In highschool, one of the requirements for a student to graduate is a term paper. In my school, graduating students were required to finish two term papers. One for English class and the other for Typing class. I didn’t submit anything, not even a rough draft. I thought I would never graduate but I did!

Now, it’s my turn to tag people. So I tag Jim, Dre, Jhay, Tin, Ade, Sarah & Jong. No rush guys! Take your time! It took me a few days to fill this up.

You auditioned for a tv ad? Cool! I wonder what if you made it, you would be a celebrity-blogger today? ;)

Thanks for the tag, I’ll do it later this day.

Oh, I was similarly fascinated with planes and tanks and other weaponry when I was a kid. My uncle had this Jane’s magazine of planes and how I marveled at those sky engines. I dreamt of flying them F18’s one day then and maybe even upto now. Kaya lang wala yata ganito nun…

@ash - hahaha..don’t be silly, I wasn’t even considered for any of the auditions or tapings that I went to.

@jhay - yeah I did and as I said, I did it coz of my tita our family friend who insisted. The main thing there is the word “If”..hehe Well, “If” I made it, probably we can’t tell for sure.

you’re welcome. I’m glad that you’ll do it.

@jong - hehe..you have a point. “If” I was a celebrity, I’d probably be too busy to be on the web, not unless it’s really a hobby of mine.

@tom - I think most boys that age are really fascinated with guns and war stuff, don’t you think? Maybe parents buy these stuff for their kids to show that their sons are really boys. Hehe

cool mag audition sa tv commercial, try mo pa ulit, yung iba nakukuha after several auditions. mukhang bata ka pa naman, ano nagpipigil sayo mag-aral mag-piloto?

@cruise - yeah, I was thinking, probably at that time I was too young and that probably I’d do a better job if I auditioned now, but after that I didn’t get another opportunity. So I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.

Bout being a pilot, I didn’t want to be an ordinary pilot, I wanted to fly fighter planes like the F-14 Tomcat. However, when I grew up I realized the dangers of it and the reality of war. :)

@paula - hahaha..it’s already under control so I guess an intervention is unnecessary. :D
