WordCamp Philippines

WordCamp Philippines

If you’re a Pinoy blogger or a WordPress user/fan then most likely you’ve heard or read of this already. But in case you haven’t, I have good news for you. There will be a WordCamp held in the Philippines this coming September 6, 2008. If you don’t know what I’m talking about here’s a little info.

What is WordCamp?

WordCamp is a conference type of event that focuses squarely on everything WordPress. Everyone from casual end users all the way up to core developers show up to these events. These events are usually highlighted by speeches or keynotes by various people. WordCamp is a spin off from the popular BarCamp which was a spin off of FooCamp. - Weblog Tools Collection

WordCamp Philippines will be the first ever WordCamp organized and held in Asia. WordCamp Philippines is being organized by a group of Filipino bloggers based in Mindanao who were also responsible for organizing the successful 1st Mindanao Bloggers Summit held last year.

What are the objectives of WordCamp Philippines?

…to encourage more developers to use and deploy WordPress, not only as a blogging engine but also as a full-featured content management system for Web sites. Another is to increase the number of WordPress users and developers in the country. By developers, we mean programmers of WordPress plugins and designers of themes & templates.

Kool IM

Kool IM is the latest thing in web chat services.

What is it you say? Kool IM is an Ajax instant messaging client that works with major instant messaging services that allows logging onto AOL, ICQ, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger, Google Talk & Jabber, eliminating the need for an instant-messaging client on the user’s computer. The most popular web instant messaging clients are Meebo and eBuddy. While other competitors include ILoveIM and Mabber.

Kool IM integrates features from Meebo and eBuddy. It uses a pop-up window for the buddy list and for chatting like eBuddy. Like Meebo it allows users to create accounts, so you won’t have to login every time for each service.

I tried it out earlier and it was okay. Personally, I still prefer Meebo for one major reason, “pop-ups”. I hate pop-ups. Most browsers try to eliminate pop-up windows. In Meebo you have your buddy list and chat windows integrated inside the same browser window and you can drag them around or resize them.

These things are helpful especially if you’re in the office or the machine you’re using doesn’t allow you to install an instant messenger client. One example is a computer lab where as a simple user, you don’t have access to install programs. Just launch a web browser, type in the url, login to your accounts and you’re good to go!

    I used to use Meebo a lot at work. Kool IM is another alternative, I guess. But like you, I don’t like pop-ups ;) By the way, the tuition fee is about P14,000, but if you want your old subjects to be credited, it would go down

    @dre - yeah, pop-ups are so annoying! 14K is reasonable considering that they have the latest facilities and good faculty as I was told.

    @eric - too bad Meebo’s already blocked. have you tried other sites aside from Kool IM, like eBuddy? anyways, glad I was able to help you in a small way. happy chatting! :D

    @dawg - thanks! :)

    @maria - It really depends on user preference. It’s good to have the option to have the window embedded into the page or as a pop-up. If it’s restricted to pop-ups, some users who use pop-up blockers might have problems using it.
