Age of Empires Online Now Available

I love real-time strategy computer games, especially the history-based ones. I’ve owned and played different versions of Civilization, Total War and Age of Empires. Two days ago, August 16th, Microsoft Studios released the much anticipated online version of the AoE series – Age of Empires Online.

AoE Online is a freemium game, meaning it is free to play but have the option to purchase premium content like special items, blueprints, quests and other features. Players can choose to play the game in single-player or co-op and horde type mode in booster packs like the Defense of Crete booster pack. AoE Online was developed by Gas Powered Games, the same company that developed the Dungeon Siege series.

If you’re not yet playing it or haven’t seen it, here’s the full cinematic trailer and several in-game screenshots.

Right now, players can only choose from two civilizations (free and premium content) – Greek and Egyptian but I’m sure they’ll be adding new civilizations like Persian, Celt, Roman, etc. soon. The graphics are very nice and the gameplay is basically the same as other AoE versions. The only difference is that on AoE Online, some features and options are only made available to players who purchase premium content. Premium civilizations cost $19.99, booster packs cost $9.99, extras (decors/blueprints) cost $4.99.

Some people are complaining about the art style which has a comic look & feel, lack of violence, etc. in this version. Personally, I find it fun and entertaining and I’m sure that most hardcore AoE fans will like this game because of the gameplay, not the graphics. I’ve been playing the game since it’s launch and I’m really enjoying and having fun with it. The only thing I don’t like with this game is that it requires an Internet connection and there’s no option to play it offline.

To check out or download the game, check out the official AoE Online website.

Anybody else playing AoE Online? Which civilization are you playing with? What features and options from this game do you like the most? Please share your thoughts.

  1. This is amazing. I had no clue they had this. I am a big Age of Empires addict and I love it, especially the Joan of Arc maps. Had no clue I can play it online.

I have the game on a disk but it doesn’t say it would work on Windows 7 and I am scared to install it to try it. Any way around this so I can play it on my computer anyway?
