Toshiba TG01 – Uber Smartphone

Toshiba TG01

A couple days ago, Toshiba officially introduced the Toshiba TG01 smartphone. This mobile internet device looks like something that is geared to compete with the popular Apple iPhone 3G and Android powered G1. The Toshiba TG01 is only 9.9 mm thick but it boasts a 4.1″ WVGA full touch screen display (800 x 480 pixels). It runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 and comes with Internet Explorer Mobile 6 (full support for Flash). The Toshiba TG01 is the first device in the world to run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform (1GHz mobile CPU).

Toshiba TG01’s internal memory is only 512 MB but has a microSD card slot that supports up to 32 GB. It has support for DivX videos and unlike other WinMo powered devices, the TG01 doesn’t use RealPlayer as the default multimedia player but instead it uses CorePlayer which is considered the best mobile multimedia player around.

Specifications:

  • Windows Mobile 6.1
  • 1.0 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD2850
  • Wi-Fi 802.11b/g
  • 3G/HSDPA
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • 3.15 MP, 2048×1536 pixels
  • GPS/aGPS support
  • Accelerometer
  • 512MB internal, up to 32GB storage via microSD
  • 4.1 inches (480×800 pixels) full touch screen display
  • microSD slot

Below is the official video released by Toshiba. It gives us a closer look at the Toshiba TG01’s features including the custom 3D GUI and the on-screen keyboard.

The Toshiba TG01 comes in two colors – black and white and as always, our European friends will be the first to get their hands on it this summer. So far no word regarding which operator/carrier gets it or how much it will be sold. I hope they’ll also release it here in the US or North America.

Based on the photos, videos and specifications I can say that I’m very impressed with the Toshiba TG01 except for one thing, the striped custom Toshiba 3D GUI which I think is ugly. But overall, this gadget is a slim and sexy mobile device that packs a punch.

So what do you think of the Toshiba TG01? Is it worthy enough to compete with iPhone 3G or G1?

  1. @jan – Haha..being generous is not a problem, its the budget thats in question. You guys should pray that I earn a lot these next few months so I can include a nice gadget like this as a giveaway. :D

  2. @elmot – I’m sure most shops especially in the Philippines are not even aware of this device yet. I’m pretty sure one of the big tech blogs would give away one of these once they’re done reviewing it. :)

  3. jaypee says, “This (smartphone) for a Christmas Giveaway? We’ll see. Who knows, I just might feel that generous next Christmas”

There’s hope, people. He said this, not me. Join me in praying jaypee will always be in a generous frame of mind especially next December. :)

  4. i asked some shops at megamall today, and they don’t have any idea yet of this toshiba.

indeed…hopefully this could be the price at some blog contest. like its design.

  5. @Solo – I have no idea yet. Toshiba hasn’t mentioned or released any information regarding the price for this phone. I just hope they come up with a competitive price rather than making it too expensive for most users.

  6. @Gem – You don’t have to be smart to own a smartphone and you don’t have to have a husband to get one. You can have a boyfriend, suitor or admirer/fan get one for you. Hehe

I barely use my phone’s camera to take photos even before. Right now, I only use it to take photos of my son. It would be nice to have toys like these but yeah, they do cost a lot. Who knows, you might win a nice gadget like these from a blog/online contest. :D

  7. Interesting SmartPhone. Looks like I had to get smarter myself. As I've told you several times before I need a husband to buy me one. Hahaha

Seriously, I never got beyond a simple phone. At least the one with a good camera. But of course, I also wanted to explore this Uber Smartphone but it's just that I don't have enough right now to buy toys.

  8. @trench – Yep, another “iPhone killer”. So far none has been successful yet. We’ll see if this one will succeed. :D

Thanks for the heads up bout CMFADS. I’ll check it out later and give it a try. :)

  9. looks pretty cool. One of those IPHONE Killer phones. Everyone is out to destroy APPLE! LOL…

OT: Jaypee, I know you do tech reviews so I'd like to introduce you to CMFADS.com… Been using them and they've been great. My username there is trench btw if you decide to check it out. I've met alot of former EC users there too.

  10. @Vincent – I know. But it would be a bigger hit if they’d make it available in both WinMo and Android. :D

I don’t think the size would be too much an issue since its very thin and lightweight and I think it’d fit most pocket sizes. But then, if I had a device like this I won’t keep it in my pocket.

Bout the wallpaper, I guess they’ll come up with a custom wallpaper/theme that’ll integrate with that striped/column UI.

  11. @jan – I’m sure if you’ll get a phone like this, you won’t want a lesser type of phone next time. You can use this phone not only to make calls, send SMS, take notes but you could also check your emails, chat and blog with it. :D

This for a Christmas Giveaway? We’ll see. Who knows, I just might feel that generous next Christmas. ;)

  12. Looks pretty awesome. I’m sure it would hit big with it’s on Android. The size is pretty big though, but I wouldn’t mind having this monster in my pocket for sure :p

By the way, no wallpaper for this phone? I mean, you probably have to stick with those colored columns so that the phone will work as it should right?

  13. Not to shabby, I guess. I can sure can live with it. Hehehe. My needs are quite simple – sms and phone calls. Lately, note-taking for blog ideas. But of course anything smarter than me I will take anytime. Jaypee, that will be a great Christmas giveaway. Hehehe.

  14. @fruity – I’m sure you can if you wanted too. ;)

Awww..that’s okay, its the thought that counts right? At least they gave you a mobile phone. I’m sure other kids would be happy if their parents gave them a mobile phone on their birthday. Besides, if you really want a fancy phone, you can just get one for yourself even if its not your birthday. Kinda like a self-reward. :D

  15. @Ade – Windows Mobile ain’t that bad, based on my experienc with my HTC TyTN II but of course, Android would be better.

I’ve read an article about someone spotting a Toshiba TG01 running on Android during this year’s CES. Maybe by the time they release it, users will have the option between a WinMo or Android version. :D

  16. Wow, I wish I could a phone like that! Oooh. My parents gave me a plain mobile phone for my birthday recently… I’m grateful for the gift, but I wish I had something more with bells and whistles, hehe.
