My candidates would have been almost the same with the final roster for each squad except for one. IMO, I don’t believe that Carmelo Anthony should be a starter for the West squad. It should’ve been Carlos Boozer or Dirk Nowitzki. Oh well, I guess he has more fans than the other players in the reserve list.

This year’s All Star game will be interesting because many players have been traded and switched teams so some of them who used to play for the West will now play for the East and vice versa. In last year’s All Star game, the West won over the East with a score of 153 to 132. The West squad still looks stronger if you look at the roster but the East has games even with a less star studded lineup. I hope Kevin Garnett could play so that the East would have a better chance of playing against the West.

I now I’m from the West coast but I’ve always rooted for the East squad ever since. I think it’s because I was a Michael Jordan fan and he always played for the East. Anyways, this year won’t be different and I’ll still be rooting for the Eastern team.

Here’s an interesting trivia. Shaquille O’Neal will not be part of the 2008 All Star Game for the first time in 14 years as a starter or a reserve.

This post was due last Sunday but due to my busy schedule, I wasn’t able to finish it and publish it. These are my thoughts on the recent Pacquaio vs Barrera 2 - Will to Win fight.

I watched the fight live via PPV at my friend’s house. While watching the undercards, I was getting excited and anxious to watch the main event. I was expecting a thrilling boxing match because before the fight, Marco Antonio Barrera said that Pacquiao would be in the fight of his life and that he would emerge as the new no. 1 pound for pound fighter and also because this was gonna be his last fight before he retires from boxing. I expected him to use a different strategy and go all out on this one. On the other hand, I expected Pacquiao to prove that his previous win over Barrera wasn’t a fluke and would want to knock him out as early as possible. I knew he could beat Barrera but I was a bit worried because I’ve heard and read reports that he wasn’t 100% ready and that he didn’t prepare or train well for the fight. He even barely made the required weight and had to rehydrate quickly before the fight.

Yes, Pacquaio won by unanimous decision but that wasn’t what his fans wanted and what most people expected. Fellow blogger Sonnie even thought it was boring, but he pointed out several lessons we could learn from the fight. I’m sure almost everyone expected a knockout or even a knockdown from Pacquiao or Barrera to fight better than their previous match. The only knockout that Manny Pacquiao scored was on Derek’s blog which crashed due to the traffic surge for his post Watch Pacquiao VS Barrera II LIVE! for FREE?

Inspite of his corner’s instructions to be more aggressive, Barrera continued on his “technical” fighting strategy. He boasted that he had a Plan A, a Plan B and a Plan C. I think his Plan A was to be a technical boxer, Plan B was to make sure Pacquiao doesn’t knock him out and Plan C was to get his revenge on Pacquiao by hitting him while the referee was trying to break them up. I couldn’t believe when Barrera said that he shouldn’t have been penalized for that hit. It was nothing but a cheapshot and I don’t blame Manny for acting up a bit to show that he was hurt. Some people say that he lost the momentum by doing it but I’m sure he knew he was ahead in points and was winning the fight so might as well make sure Barrera loses a point for it. I also admire Manny for not retaliating and being a good sport.

In fairness to both fighters, I think everyone expected too much from both of them. Barrera fought the way he wanted to and ended his career in his own terms. As a fan, I’m glad that Pacquiao won this fight but I’m disappointed on how he lost focus and how he lazily prepared for this fight. I hope he learns from this experience and start to prioritize and focus more on boxing rather than doing commercials, filming movies and other distractions if he wants to continue his boxing career that is.

Both men circling and jabbing. Each man reaches for the other’s body with straight punches. Clearly plenty of mutual respect here. They exchange flurries toward the end of the round as the crowd roars, although Pacquiao’s seem slightly stronger. Tough round to score, and there is a sense the fight could explode at any time.

A right from Pacquiao and another. Barrera circles and jabs and follows with a straight right and Pacquiao lands a right at the bell as Barrera circles away.

Pacquiao lands a good right, and Barrera responds with a left and the two trade. A left/right lands from Pacquiao.

Round 5

Hook lands from Barrera. Pacquiao lands a left, Barrera a right and they exchange furiously against the ropes. Left/right from Pacquiao, and another, and the fight is really underway now.

Round 6
Left/right from Pacquiao drives Barrera to the ropes, and Pacquiao flurries. Right hand to the body from Barrera. Left from Pacquiao, a sharp counter right to the jaw from Barrera, and they unload on each other again. Pacquiao drives Barrera to the ropes, and lands a beautiful combination to body and head. Barrera is fighting back, but Pacquiao is more active, and his punches are heavier.

Round 7
Pacquiao lands a straight left down the middle behind a right jab. Barrera hooks to the body. Barrera is circling, but isn’t throwing much. A quietr round, but the offense is coming from Pacquiao who isn’t giving Barrera much room to counter.

Round 8
Right/left from Barrera. Left lands from Pacquiao, and Barrera responds with a right. A left/right from Barrera as the pace slows a little and seemingly to his advantage. A right/left from Pacquiao misses, and Barrera lands a left. But then Pacquiao turns it up and lands a solid right hand on the button, and then another.

Then again, some of the rounds were very close, so who knows? It’s time for the judges to decide.

Tomorrow, October 6 Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines will once again face Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera in a 12 round match for the super featherweight title dubbed as “Will to Win”.

The last time they fought, Pacquiao totally outclassed and floored the “Baby Faced Assassin” three times before Barrera’s corner threw in the towel in the 11th round. This time both boxers have something to prove, Barrera is determined to prove that he is the better boxer while Pacquiao wants to prove that his win was not a fluke.

Here’s what both fighters have to say about each other and the coming fight:

“Fighting Barrera is a career highlight for me,” “He has already beaten great world champions like Erik Morales, Naseem Hamed and Johnny Tapia and I know I am going to have to train harder than I ever have before to beat him. Many boxing analysts consider Pacquiao vs Barrera II as the fight of the year. I’m sure this match will be both exciting and thrilling and expect both fighters to go all out. Barrera never backs down from a challenge while Pacquiao is known as a no guts no glory type of fighter.

In my 2007 NBA All-Star post, I listed the Eastern and Western squad starters and reserves. However, there will be some changes in those lineups due to injuries suffered by some of the players.

Last Friday, February 9th, NBA Commissioner David Stern named Josh Howard (Dallas Mavericks) and Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets) as replacements for injured West All-Stars Yao Ming (Houston Rockets) and Carlos Boozer (Utah Jazz) for the All-Star Game on Sunday, February 18th in Las Vegas. Both Howard and Anthony will be making their first All-Star appearances.

Then last Tuesday, February 13th, Ray Allen (Seattle SuperSonics) and Mehmet Okur (Utah Jazz) were named as replacements for injured West All-Stars Allen Iverson (Denver Nuggets) and Steve Nash (Phoenix Suns) also for the All-Star Game. It will be Ray Allen’s seventh appearance while Okur will be making his All-Star debut. For the Eastern All-Star squad, Joe Johnson (Atlanta Hawks) will make his first All-Star appearance as he replaces the injured Jason Kidd (New Jersey Nets).

Chris Paul (New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets) will replace Steve Nash in the Playstation Skills Challenge on Saturday Night, February 17th.

Aside from the Playoffs and the NBA Finals, the All-Star Weekend is one of the events basketball fans around the world look forward to every year. This year’s All-Star Weekend will be held in Las Vegas starting February 16th until the 18th. Last night, the NBa announced the starting lineup for the 2007 NBA All-Star Game.

East Starting Lineup:
G - Gilbert Arenas (Washington Wizards)
G - Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat)
F - Lebron James (Cleveland Cavaliers)
F - Chris Bosh (Toronto Raptors)
C - Shaquille O’Neal (Miami Heat)

West Starting Lineup:
G - Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers)
G - Tracy McGrady (Houston Rockets)
F - Kevin Garnett (Minnesota Timberwolves)
F - Tim Duncan (San Antonio Spurs)
C - Yao Ming (Houston Rockets)

Lebron James got the most number of votes this year with 2,516,049 votes. The second-highest total in history behind Yao Ming’s 2,558,278 which he got in 2005. Just like last year, I tried to vote as often as I could for the East & West All-Star lineup. This is my All Star lineup for this year:

I did fairly well in choosing my lineups for this year except for the West, where I only got Kobe Bryant & Kevin Garnett. For the East, Vince Carter was the only one who didn’t make the starting lineup. Gilbert Arenas narrowly beat him with just a few votes. I don’t mind coz Arenas is playing like a mad man this season. He deserves to be in the starting lineup.

You might wonder why Kobe Bryant is not in the picture. He should have been there but the last time I voted I wasn’t able to save a screenshot of my lineup. So Kobe Bryant should be in the place of Ray Allen and Ray would be in the bench for the West.

For the other guard spot, T-Mac is a good choice but I also consider Allen Iverson & Steve Nash to be deserving of that spot. I didn’t vote for Tim Duncan becoz he doesn’t belong to the All Star Game. Forgive me Duncan fans. I have great respect for him as a player and I know that he’s one of most dominant players ever in the game BUT, his style of game *yawns* doesn’t fit the showtime type of game in the All-Stars. Same goes for Yao Ming. The only reason why Yao gets that much votes is becoz of his millions of fans in China. Again, pardon me Yao fans but he’s just too slow for the pace of the All-Star Game.

Anyways, I’m just looking forward to the 2007 All-Stars. Too bad I can’t go and watch it in Vegas. I’ll just have to watch it on tv. I hope the East wins it again.

Aside from the All-Star Game which is the main event, I’m also excited to watch the Playstation Skills Challenge, Footlocker Three-point Shootout & the Sprite Slam Dunk contest.

If you ask me, Ray Allen should be playing for the West squad. His performance this season is much better than that of Tony Parker. And for the East, I believe that Ben Gordon of the Chicago Bulls should be one of the reserves. I believe he deserves the spot rather than Chauncey Billups or Rip Hamilton. I’m sure most of you NBA fans will agree on that.

David Beckham turned down a two-year contract extension and will leave Real Madrid when his contract expires on July 1st. He will join the MLS (Major League Soccer) team, Los Angeles Galaxy. With this move, MLS organizers hope to boost the sport of soccer here in the United States.

“There are so many great sports in America,” the former Manchester United star said. “There are so many kids that play baseball, American football, basketball. But soccer is huge all around the world apart from America, so that’s where I want to make a difference with the kids.”

David Beckham’s 5-year contract with the Galaxy is reportedly worth $250 million.

With Denver up by about twenty points and with less than two minutes left in the ball game, Knicks rookie Mardy Collins prevented a J.R. Smith fastbreak and a possible dunk by fouling him hard, grabbing him around the neck with both arms. This started the ugly brawl in Madison Square Garden and resulted in 10 players getting ejected.

The ejected players were Denver’s Carmelo Anthony, Marcus Camby, Anthony Miller, Eduardo Najera, J.R. Smith and New York’s Mardy Collins, Channing Frye, Jared Jeffries, David Lee and Nate Robinson.

Below is a video clip of what happened. You can actually hear the punch thrown by Carmelo Anthony as it hits Mardy Collins in the face.

This is sad coz a lot of kids watch this game live in the stadium and others on TV. A lot of these kids look up to these players as role models and idols. Carmelo Anthony together with Lebron James and Dwyane Wade are considered as franchise players and the future of the league. However, with this incident, Anthony has left a permanent stigma on his young career. People would always remember him for that sucker punch on Mardy Collins.

Carmelo Anthony’s statement about his actions:

“Last night’s altercation with the Knicks escalated further than it should have. I take full responsibility for my actions in the matter. In the heat of the moment I let my emotions get the best of me. I apologize to the fans, the Denver Nuggets, the NBA, my mother, and my family for the embarrassment I have caused them. I ask you all for your forgiveness.

I also want to make a personal apology to Mardy Collins and his family. My actions were inexcusable, and I am sorry for making this an even more embarrassing situation.

What makes this all the more painful is that this was one of the most important weeks of my life. I just realized one of my biggest dreams when we opened the Youth Center in Baltimore that bares (sic) my name. To see the community excited and hundreds of kids smiling was an incredible feeling. Now the thought of thousands of kids seeing this incident on TV pains me. This is not the example I want to set.

It’s my hope that we work to move forward from this event, and never let something like this happen again.”

Just today, the NBA Commissioner David Stern handed out the penalties. NBA leading scorer Carmelo Anthony who threw the now infamous sucker punch on Mardy Collins, got a 15 game suspension. Nate Robinson and J.R. Smith who threw punches at each other and scuffled on the floor each got a 10 game suspension. Mardy Collins who committed the flagrant 2 foul on J.R. Smith got 6 games. Other players who got suspended were Jared Jeffries - 4 games, Knicks Jerome James & Denver’s Nene both a game each for leaving the bench. David Stern also fined both organizations, the Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks $500,000 each.

These penalties show that the league is serious about zero tolerance on fights and brawls or anything that could destroy the image of the NBA. However, basketball is a contact sport and when tempers flare, players tend to forget and lose control. I’m sure that this won’t be the last fight or brawl we’ll see in the NBA.
