Microsoft revealed earlier today their newest mobile operating system – the Windows Phone 7 Series at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Windows Phone 7 Series is not only a rebranding and a redesign of Windows Mobile but a completely new and fresh mobile operating system. This new mobile operating system looks like it was built from scratch because there are no traces of the old Windows Mobile – everything is brand new.

The biggest change and the most noticeable feature in Windows Phone 7 Series is the user interface. It is totally different and instead of the conventional grid of icons, it features big flat squares that are dubbed “live tiles“. These “live tiles” show different content ranging from frequent contacts to local information, pictures, music and videos, office apps, games and social networks or any custom app that can update automatically with information via the phone or the Internet.

Windows Phone 7 Series will be available late this year across all major wireless carriers in the US – AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint & T-Mobile USA; some big-name wireless carries in Europe – Deutsche Telekom AG, Orange, SFR, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telstra & Vodafone; and in devices manufactured by hardware partners like Dell, Garmin-Asus, HTC, HP, LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Qualcomm. Initial reviews for the Windows Phone 7 Series are positive and tech blogs or users who’ve had hands-on experience are all excited and raving about it.

Below is a short video featuring the user interface of the Windows Phone 7 Series.<br

It could be, but some sources are saying that it is not and that the device used at the Mobile World Congress was just Windows Mobile running a Zune client.

Just by seeing the hands-on photos from different blogs and websites and watching the video above, I can say that Windows Phone 7 Series is a cool mobile operating system.

For a more in-depth and hands-on review, check out Gizmodo’s article – <a

Well, this post somewhat involves WordPress. For those who aren’t famliar, Movable Type is another type of blogging platform which is developed by a company called Six Apart. Yesterday, they released the newest version of their software – Movable Type 5. This version’s features include a new user dashboard for both website and blogs, a new theme mechanism and enhanced content management features like revision history and new custom fields.

So how is WordPress involved in this topic? Movable Type 5’s new user dashboard. As you can see from the screenshots below, MT’s new dashboard does have a very strong resemblance with the WordPress dashboard. I included a screenshot of Movable Type 4 so you can compare and see the changes in the user dashboard.

Movable Type 4 Dashboard

Movable Type 5 Dashboard

WordPress Dashboard (Post version 2.7)

I first read about this on Weblog Tools Collection and although I’m totally against ripping off somebody’s ideas/work, I agree with Jeff Chandler’s stand on this topic. The WordPress dashboard is not only pretty but also very functional so it won’t be a surprise if someone would try to imitate or adapt that into their own work. As the saying goes – “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”. There’s also the issue of GPL. WordPress is open source and is released under a GPL License Version 2 which means anyone can copy it as long as the process adhere’s to the license.

Anyways, I heard that many WordPress users aren’t happy with this and are accusing MT of “borrowing” the WordPress publishing interface. We can’t blame them because you can really see a strong resemblance especially if you compare the new MT dashboard with the previous design. Although there are also some WordPress users who say that they like Movable Type’s new dashboard better than WordPress.

My take on this? I’m interested to find out what Matt or the other core developers feel about this. If they don’t react or say anything against this, then I think we users should also do the same thing. If there’s anyone who should react to this, it should be them. Also, I don’t care what other blogging platforms do or how nice their user interface looks like because I’m sticking with the best blogging platform/content management system – WordPress. I <3 WordPress!

You might also want to read this <a

Which dashboard version do you like better, Movable Type or WordPress? Please share your thoughts.

Copyright © 2010

Remember the times when you had to carry a case full of floppy disks to carry your digital documents and files? I do. Portable media storage devices like the zip drive were already available at that time but they were quite expensive and not everyone could afford them. Technology has vastly improved and gone a long way since then. Portable media storage devices like the USB flash drive or thumb drive are becoming smaller, cheaper and have more storage capacity. They are now a common sight and you see a lot of people bring it with them to school, in the office or anywhere they go.

I recently purchased a 4 GB Sandisk Micro Cruzer. I bought this USB flash drive because it was on sale for cheap from Amazon.com and because I needed something that can store important files, portable programs and installers for different programs like office productivity software, data recovery, anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, web browser, cd/dvd burning software and other useful utility software. I bring it with me anywhere I go because it can come in handy in certain situations.

Anyways, while I was sorting the stuff in my USB flash drive, I thought of blogging about it, share with you what I have on inside it and at the same time ask you guys what you have on your USB drives? This is quite a long list and it should’ve been more if I had extra space on my USB flash drive. Btw, all of the programs/installers in this list are freeware or open source.

Programs Installed:

ClamWin Portable

Firefox Portable

GIMP Portable

Notepad++ Portable

Pidgin Portable

VLC Portable

Misc Files:

Select mp3s

Videos

Documents

Software Installers:

Data/System Recovery

Avira UnErase Personal

FreeUndelete

PhotoRec

Recover My Files

Recuva

Restoration

File Encryption

AxCrypt

dsCrypt

TrueCrypt

File Manager

Free Commander

Xplorer2

CD/DVD Burning Software

Ashampoo Burning Studio 6

Avi2DVD

CDBurnerXP

DVD Shrink

HandBrake

ImgBurn

InfraRecorder

Instant Messaging

Digsby

Miranda IM

Pidgin

Trillian Astra Basic

Windows Live Messenger

Yahoo Messenger

Image Viewer/Editor

FastStone Image Viewer

GIMP

IrfanView

LightBox Free

Paint.NET

PhotoScape

Picasa

CD/DVD Emulation

Daemon Tools Lite

GizmoDrive

Media File Converters

AnyVideoConverter

Format Factory

MediaCoder

VioVideoConverter

Media Players

Applian FLV Player

DivX

Foobar2000

iTunes

JetAudio Basic

KM Player

MediaMonkey

Media Player Classic

Miro HD Video Player

QuickTime

Songbird

VLC Media Player

Office Productivity

Abiword

OpenOffice

Mozilla Thunderbird

PDF Tools

CuteWriter

Foxit Reader

PDFill Free Writer

Other Installers

7zip

Adobe AIR

Adobe Flash Player

AMP Font Viewer

Audacity

Download Accelerator Plus

EphPod

FileZilla

Google Earth

KLite Code Full

OperaTor

PeaZip

Microsoft Silverlight

UltraVNC

uTorrent

Portable Apps

BPBible Portable

ClamWin Portable

Cornice Image Viewer Portable

Firefox Portable

GIMP Portable

Notepad++ Portable

Pidgin Portable

Portable Apps Suite

VLC Portable

XAMPP Portable

Programming

Notepad++

NVU

Zoundry Raven WYSIWYG Editor

Security/Privacy

Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition

a-squared Free

Avast Home Edition

AVG Free

Avira Personal

CCleaner

Comodo Internet Security

Comodo Firewall

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Outpost Firewall Free

PC Tools ThreatFire

Spybot Search & Destroy

ZoneAlarm Free

System Tools

Absolute File Shredder

Comodo BO Cleaner

CPU-Z

EASEUS Partition Manager Home Edition

Eraser File Shredder

HijackThis

jDiskReport

MyUninstaller

PC Decrapifier

Revo Uninstaller

SIW (System Information for Windows)

WinAudit

Video Editors

VirtualDub

Avidemux

Web Browsers

Flock

Google Chrome

Mozilla Firefox

Opera

Safari

Another reason why I carry all these installers on my USB drive is because I’m frequently asked by family and friends to check out their computers for problems and fix it. Most of the time, when I check their computers they don’t have an antivirus or the license is already expired. There are also times when they complain that their computers have become sluggish or very slow (common symptom of malware or spyware infection) so I install an antispyware or anti-malware on their computers and run a thorough scan. Anyways, you get the idea.

How about you guys, what’s on your USB drive? Do you know of other useful programs/installers that are not included in the list? Please share it with us.

Copyright © 2010 Firefox for about 8 years now and I know most of you guys who are regulars here know that. Although Firefox is my browser of choice, I do have other browsers installed on my laptop – Internet Explorer 8, Flock, Safari 4, Google Chrome and Opera. I have all of these browsers because I use them when I test my projects or when I test WordPress themes and plugins that I review here on JaypeeOnline.

I make it a point to keep my other web browsers up-to-date and earlier today, I found out that Opera announced the Beta 3 release of Opera 10.

Oslo, Norway — August 13, 2009

After more than 10 million test runs and ample user feedback, Opera 10 is now available in its third beta version from http://www.opera.com/next/. Performance and stability were prioritized in beta 3, with improvements to Opera Turbo, a compression tool for faster surfing, and refinements to the overall look and feel of the previous Opera 10 betas.

Here are the new features of Opera 10 Beta 3:

Tab tweaks – Multiple Opera users who tested the previous betas shared their preferences for more visual tab options. Opera has responded in beta 3 by offering options for tab placement. Now users can view their visual thumbnail tabs on the right or left side of the screen, in addition to placement options on the top or bottom. Visual Tabs are resizable and the thumbnail view is optional.

Eyes on the UI – Designer Jon Hicks continues his renovation of the user interface (UI) by implementing several new tweaks designed to make using Opera even more efficient.

Multilingual – With a whopping total of 38 languages, Opera’s beta 3 aims to make it easier for users around the world to feel more at home while online.

Crash prevention – Opera’s integrated crash logger has made beta 3 a rock-solid ride.

Even more Turbo – Opera Turbo has been further refined for increased speed when browsing over slow network connections.

I’ve downloaded, installed and tried out the Opera 10 Beta 3 on my laptop and I must say that it loads pages quite fast. Inspite of the fast page load times and several new features, I’m still sticking to Firefox coz of the plugins/extensions that I use for work and which I can’t live without. Although I do use Opera Mobile on my AT&T Tilt, but that’s only until Mozilla releases their mobile browser Fennec.

You can download Opera 10 Beta 3 here.

How about you guys? Anyone here using Opera as their web browser of choice? Have you tried Opera 10 Beta 3?

Copyright © 2010

Three weeks ago, 15-year-old David Nelson together with his dad Mark released a music service called Muziic. This music service slash media player uses YouTube’s API to gather the millions of music videos from YouTube and enables its users to sort and add these videos into playlists like they were mp3s. It basically turns YouTube as a streaming multimedia library.

How did a young boy come up with such a brilliant idea? The idea of creating Muziic was born about a year ago, while father and son were watching Star Trek. Mark, David’s father came up with a brilliant idea of creating a music site using YouTube’s API. David then came up with the idea of creating a desktop app that users can use from their computers to play YouTube videos using the app’s built-in media player. David did all the programming behind Muziic and that is quite amazing considering that he is a self-taught programmer. He started learning HTML at age 8 and later on developed his skills on Javascript, Visual Basic and PHP.

Muziic is simple and straightforward. To start using Muziic, you first need to download and install the desktop app into your computer. The desktop app works both as the main user interface for searching music videos, creating and organizing music videos into playlists and media player where the user can listen and/or watch the music videos. With 8 custom skins to choose from, you can change the look and feel of Muziic’s media player. Btw, Muziic’s media player UI (user interface) kind of reminds me of another popular media player – Winamp.

Muziic media player

Searching for music videos is easy, all you need to do is type the name of an artist or title of a song in the search bar and Muziic will display a list of all music videos related to your search. The user then can listen/watch to any music video by double clicking on the song. When playing songs/music videos, the user can choose between standard and HQ stereo quality. Adding/saving music videos into playlists requires the user to have a registered account on Muziic.

Muziic comes with its own encoder that users can use to convert their own media files to flv format and upload them to YouTube. As of now, Muziic is only available for Windows XP and Vista.

Muziic encoder

Within two weeks after it was launched, Muziic has already been covered and featured on CNET, CNN, CBS News, The Huffington Post, Ars Technica, Billboard, Yahoo, Wired and other big name website/blogs. Due to Muziics popularity which gets about 70,000 visitors each day, David Nelson has decided to quit public high school and attend a private online high school so he can concentrate and spend more time developing his new project.

Muziic was created and launched without the consent of YouTube and with that, many are questioning the legality of the service. When asked about Muziic, a Google spokesperson had this to say:

“We encourage people to leverage the power of our open API to embed YouTube videos in creative and innovative ways that comply with our terms of service.”

While Mark Nelson, David’s father and CEO/Co-founder of Muziic had this to say:

“We feel that YouTube now has a better understanding of Muziic’s intentions for creating a YouTube-powered music site, and we have a much greater feel for what YouTube would like out of a music service driven by their API.”

Right now, Mark and David Nelson are now in talks with Google, YouTube’s parent company. So we’ll have to wait and see if both parties can work out a deal and hopefully they would. It’s also interesting to see what the label companies have to say about Muziic and what their reaction would be.

After trying out the past couple of days, there are only two things that I don’t like about Muziic. First, is that the media player window can’t be resized and second, that you can’t play the videos fullscreen. Other than that, its user-friendly and works like its supposed to. Regardless of the legal stuff, all I can say is that Muziic is a very brilliant idea. It makes you go, “Why didn’t I think of that?”. I hope Muziic and Google/YouTube can work it out so that users can benefit from both awesome services.

Check out

Yesterday, Apple released the public beta version of Safari 4 for both Mac OS X and Windows platforms. According to Apple, Safari 4 is faster and “more innovative” than Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and other competing browsers.

Safari 4 runs on a new Javascript engine called Nitro which Apple claims to be 30 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and more than 3 times faster than Firefox 3. Apple also claims that Safari 4 has a page load time 3 times faster than IE7 and Firefox 3 although performance may vary according to the system configuration and other factors.

I don’t really use Safari that much, only for testing purposes but I went and downloaded/installed Safari 4 just to check it out and see the new features.

Top Sites

The first thing you’ll notice is Top Sites, which is a visual menu that displays graphic previews of frequently visited web sites. For first time users, Top Sites will be made up of preselected popular web sites like Yahoo!, CNN. YouTube, New York Times, etc. and as you go and use it, these slots will be replaced with the web sites that you frequently visit.

Top Sites Edit Mode

Top Sites is customizable. Clicking on the EDIT button (found at the lower left corner) lets the user remove or rearrange the sites (drag-and-drop style) according to their preference. By default, Top Sites is displayed on medium sized thumbnails and in EDIT mode, you can change the size to small, medium or large.

Top Sites Small Thumbnails

Top Sites Large Thumbnails

Cover Flow

Cover Flow is one of the new features in Safari 4. I’m sure most of you are familiar with it and have seen it in other Apple Products like the iPod, iPhone and iTunes. In Safari, this feature lets you browse through the different web sites listed in the Bookmarks or History of web sites you’ve visited. I noticed that the thumbnail generation in Cover Flow was a bit slow and lagged once in a while.

Acid Test

Safari 4 is the first browser to pass the Web Standards Project’s Acid 3 test scoring 100/100, meaning it fully complies with CSS, Javascript, XML and SVG web standards.

My Take:
So how does Safari 4 compare to other browsers? Prettier? Yes. Faster? Yes. Better? I don’t think so. Safari 4 is definitely better than its predecessor, the Safari 3 and it lives up to its “Browsing made beautiful. And Smart” tag line but IMO is not better than other competing browsers especially Firefox. But again, this is only a public beta version of Safari 4 so we could still some changes and improvement in the final version.

After trying and testing Safari 4 public beta, I’m still sticking to Firefox as my default web browser for 2 reasons. First, Safari 4 doesn’t have official plugin support (I can’t live without my plugins) and second, Safari 4 is a resource hog. With only 1 tab open, Safari 4 was using up almost double the amount of resources Firefox was using with 10 tabs open.

For those who don’t use plugins and only need a simple and fast browser that has some cool features, you should try Safari 4.

So what do you think of Safari 4? Anyone else installed and tried it on their computer? What’s your experience using Safari 4? What do you like/dislike about it? What features would you like to see added to Safari 4? Please share your thoughts and thanks for your time!

Copyright © 2010 WordCamp: Las Vegas, not only about WordPress and not only from the speakers but also from the other attendees.

Honestly, I barely used Twitter before WordCamp and used it only to network and publish my recent blog posts using TwitterFeed. At WordCamp I can safely say that almost everybody in the room were busy tweeting. People were using their laptops or mobile devices to tweet about what was happening at the event or something that the current speaker was talking about. I noticed that several people were using some sort of desktop application for Twitter, which I later found out to be TweetDeck. I know it isn’t new for some of you but it was for me and I’m glad I found out about it coz it made me fall in love with Twitter again.

What is TweetDeck?

TweetDeck is an Adobe Air desktop application that is currently in public beta. It aims to evolve the existing functionality of Twitter by taking an abundance of information i.e twitter feeds, and breaking it down into more manageable bite sized pieces.

What makes it different from other Twitter desktop clients like Twitteriffic, Twhirl, Snitter, and AlertThingy? TweetDeck can display more than one column of information at a time. As a default, TweetDeck displays three columns – All Friends, Replies and Direct Messages but you can add more columns Search and Groups (maximum of 10 columns). Aside from that you can move any column left or right, you can also filter any column according to text, username, source or timeframe. If you follow a lot of people on Twitter, TweetDeck’s ability to create Groups and sort/filter the content is a very useful tool. To make changes to any Group or to add/remove members, just click on the Group name.

Notification

TweetDeck notifies you of recently received tweets/updates that shows up on the upper right corner of your screen.

Status Indicator

TweetDeck indicates the last time tweets were received and also displays the Twitter server status.

Tweet Window

By default, the tweet window is displayed on top of TweetDeck but can be easily moved to the bottom via the settings page. TweetDeck’s tweet window includes a link shortening tool powered by bit.ly, lets you share pictures using TwitPic and also includes TweetShrink, a service that shortens tweets to help you make the 140 character limit.

Additional Features

Catch up with overnight global twitterings as TweetDeck stores all updates whilst running

Continual status updates of TweetDeck and Twitter

Resize TweetDeck as either an unobtrusive column, full screen or anything in between

Especially useful running full screen on a separate monitor

Filter tweets using the tweet text, username, source or timeframe

Auto updates from the Twitter API

Aside from these features, you can also customize TweetDeck and some of its functionality via the settings.

TweetDeck Settings

As with most applications or software, some people will like it and some won’t. Others won’t like the fact that it occupies too much space because it has more than one column. Another thing to consider about TweetDeck is that it uses up quite a lot of the computer’s resources so this can be a turn-off for some users. But then, with all the functionality and features that it offers, I’m sure many Twitter users like me would like it and use it.

TweetDeck is available for Mac OS X and Windows XP & Vista. TweetDeck requires Adobe AIR runtime to be installed first. Download the TweetDeck AIR file.

Btw, I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop and I was also able to install TweetDeck on it. If you’re interested to know how I did that, I’ll be writing a post about that later so make sure subscribe to my RSS feed so you won’t miss it.

Do you currently use any Twitter desktop client like Twitteriffic, Twhirl, Snitter? Do you know of any other Twitter desktop clients? What do you think of TweetDeck? What are the features that you like/dislike from TweetDeck? Would you consider using TweetDeck as your Twitter desktop client?

Copyright © 2010 Fennec M9 Acid Test

Mobile devices running on Windows Mobile come with the crappy Internet Explorer Mobile already preinstalled as its default browser which is even worse than it’s big brother Internet Explorer. The best alternative right now is the Opera Mini which is free, a little bit limited in terms of features and functionality but works much better than Internet Explorer Mobile.

I currently have two browsers installed on my Tilt. The first one is Opera Mobile that costs $24 and the other one is Skyfire, a free mobile browser but still in open beta testing (requires signup). I really like both browsers because they are full-featured and render pages really well unlike the Internet Explorer Mobile.

Although I like Opera Mobile and Skyfire, I’m still looking forward to the release of Fennec M9. Why? Because its free and it’s the mobile version of Mozilla Firefox. Aside from that, I also love the UI (user interface) and controls. Based on what I’ve seen from the concept video, I can see how easy it is to navigate, zoom in and out of the page, open several tabs and organize them in the main screen. In Opera Mobile, you’re only limited to a maximum of 3 tabs. I can’t wait to get my hands on Fennec M9 and try it out on my phone.

I don’t know why it took so long for Mozilla to come up with a mobile version of Firefox and Opera has had a huge head start with Opera Mini and Opera Mobile. But better late than never, right? If Fennec can perform better or just the same as Opera Mobile, I think Mozilla will be able to get a good share of the mobile browser market because Fennec is free and they already have a large amount of users and followers.

What are your thoughts about the Firefox Mobile browser aka Fennec M9? Do you think it’s too late for Mozilla to come up with a mobile browser version of Firefox? Would you replace your current mobile browser once Fennec is released?

NOTE: I started writing this post two weeks ago and wasn’t able to publish it. I found out recently that the alpha version of Firefox Mobile browser aka Fennec M9 has already been released to the public. Right now it is only available for the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet.

via <a

While in the process of looking for Google Chrome plugins/extensions and tweaks, I came across this flash-based game called the Chromon. It is an adaptation of the popular electronic memory game in the 80’s called the Simon Game into the Google Chrome logo. I’m sure most of you have seen, played or had it when you were a kid.

For those of you who aren’t familiar on how the Simon Game works, this Chromon game is played by mimicking the sequence/pattern of colored lights that the computer chooses. The game ends when the human player makes a mistake or when the human player wins (matching the predetermined sequence or pattern).

Below is the Chromon game itself. To start playing just click on Play.
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 was finally released and made available for download 2 months ago, I didn't immediately update my Windows Vista installation. Why? Because I wasn't excited and neither was I looking forward to it. Windows Vista came pre-installed on my machine but if I had the choice, I would've opted to install Windows XP on it.Regarding the Vista SP 1 update, I said to myself that I would just wait for the auto-update rollout which was scheduled a month after the release. However, the month of April passed and there was no SP1 on Windows Update. Anyone else got the update last month? Anyways, I got mine just a couple days ago. When I saw the Windows Update icon, I clicked on it and found out the update was for Vista Service Pack 1, I decided to go ahead with the update instead of skipping it.Btw, if you haven't received a Windows Update for Service Pack 1 and you wanna check what version/edition of Windows Vista you have on your machine here's how you do it. Click on Start, then look for Computer, right click on it and click on Properties and you'll see something like this:

The screenshot above was taken after the update so if you haven’t update yet, you won’t see “Service Pack 1″ on it. The update process (download and installation) took close to 4 hours! Inspite of the long and agonizing wait, I’m glad that everything worked fine and the whole update process went smoothly. I also didn’t have any problems with any device drivers.

If you don’t have Vista Service Pack 1 installed on your machine yet, you can do a Windows Update manually by clicking on the link. This will open up Windows Update on Internet Explorer and although I’m not 100% sure, I’m positive the Service Pack 1 update will be there.

For those of you running Windows Vista, have you already updated to Service Pack 1? If not, what’s keeping you from doing it? For those who updated, did you experience any problems with the update/install process? Where there any conflicts or problems with your device drivers after the update? Share your thoughts and comments via the comment form. Thank you and have a good weekend!

Copyright © 2010 <a
