Are you guys familiar or have heard of After the Deadline? It is a hosted writing improvement web service that was acquired by Automattic last year. After the Deadline (AtD) provides its service via a WordPress and TinyMCE plugin that works as a contextual spell checking, advanced style checking and intelligent grammar checking tool. It’s free to download and use, all you need to do is register for an API key, then you can download it and install.

If you’re interested in using After the Deadline but don’t have a WordPress blog, don’t worry because with the recent release of the After the Deadline Firefox addon, you don’t need a WordPress blog or TinyMCE to use it. Below is a screencast about the new After the Deadline Firefox addon.

With the After the Deadline Firefox addon, you can take this powerful and smart proofreader anywhere in the web. You can use it on different websites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. The After the Deadline addon can be activated/deactivated by clicking on the check button showed in the screencast or pressing the F7 key. Once its activated, it will underline any spelling, styling or grammatical errors. Just right-click on any underlined word and choose the right word from a list of suggested words. Also, if you try to submit/publish something without proofreading it, the addon will notify you of any detected errors and ask if you want to proceed. If you click on Cancel, After the Deadline will highlight/underline the errors. Once you’re done proofreading it, you can proceed submitting/publishing it.

I’m glad that they released an After the Deadline Firefox addon because now I can use it not only on my WordPress blog but on almost any website I visit. I also like the Explain feature that gives further details about the spelling or grammatical error. This is a very useful addon if you do a lot of writing and want to make sure that your spelling and grammar are always correct. Not only will it help you write better but it will also help you save time because you will spend less time editing. For now they only have an addon for Firefox so for those who don’t like or don’t use Firefox as their main web browser, but would like to use After the Deadline, they can download and install other versions of the plugin designed for other platforms.

A few months after Apple rejected a downloadable version of the Google Voice app, Google released a new web-based version of the Google Voice application that works via any HTML5-enabled mobile web browser. Google announced the release of the Google Voice mobile web app for the iPhone and Palm Web OS devices yesterday on the Google Voice blog.

Today we are launching a new Google Voice mobile web app for iPhone OS 3.0 and higher and Palm Web OS devices, harnessing the power of HTML5, a new web technology that makes it possible to run faster, richer web-based applications right in the browser.

Aside from making calls, the new Google Voice web app lets you access a streamlined version of your Google Voice inbox and lets you choose to display your Google Voice number as the outbound caller ID which is useful if you want to have return calls directed to your Google Voice number. The app also lets you send and receive SMS or text messages for free (ideal for users who have limited text plans) and last but not least, make cheap International calls with Google Voice’s low rates.

Since this is a web app and not a native app, the new Google Voice app is limited. Unlike the native apps available for the Android and Blackberry, this app can’t insert itself as the default phone interface and can’t access contacts stored on your phone. Although this can be solved by using Google Sync to sync your phone contacts with your Google account.

For those who are planning to use the Google Voice web app, one thing to take note of is that when you make an outgoing call, your phone will call Google’s routing number and not the number you’re dialing then it will ask you to confirm if you want to proceed with the call or not. This can be confusing for first time users but doesn’t really matter once you get the hang of it. When someone will call you using your Google Voice number, they’ll be greeted by a voice prompt that will ask for their name and once they provide their name, Google will proceed to dial the phone number you’ve set to forward your Google Voice calls to. Right now, its unlikely that Apple would allow a native Google Voice app on the App Store so for now, this new web based app will do. I’m just glad that I finally get to use Google Voice on my iPhone.

I just recently got my Google Voice number (thanks to the invite sent by my friend AJ), and have tried the new Google Voice web app on my iPhone 3GS. Although it is limited, the new Google Voice web app is a cool and useful tool. One of the advantages of having a Google Voice number is that if in case I need to change my mobile phone number, all I have to do is change the number where I forward my Google Voice calls and I don’t have to worry about missing any calls or having to inform my contacts about my new number. This only applies if you have provided your Google Voice number to your contacts.

If you have a Google Voice account and would like to try it on your iPhone or Palm Web OS powered device, this new app can be accessed via m.google.com/voice on your mobile browser.

If you own a computer running on Windows, there comes a time when your computer would start to slow down, start to get wonky and the overall performance gets unstable. Windows as an operating system, doesn’t do a good job in organizing files. Whenever you add or delete files on your computer, these files get scattered all over and causes the computer to take longer in accessing and locating these files – thus slowing down your computer. Because of that, you need to defrag the file system every now and then to keep your computer running at an optimal level. Windows has a built-in tool called the Disk Defragmenter, but the problem with this tool is that its too slow and not very efficient.

Thankfully there are alternatives to the Windows Disk Defragmenter that are not only FREE but also do a better job. I’ve browsed the web and made a list of all the free defragmentation software I could find. Hope you find one that works for you!

For web designers and bloggers, one of the important things that needs to be considered when designing a webpage or choosing a blog theme is browser size. Another important aspect related to this topic is called the “fold”, which refers to the visible area of a webpage that the reader can see without having to scroll down or sideways. Many users are too lazy to scroll so if you have stuff or content on your webpage or blog that are not above the fold, it most likely that it won’t be seen or get viewed by these users.

Last month, Google Labs released a new tool called Browser Size.

To help you understand how everyone sees your website, we created a tool called Browser Size in our 20% time. Browser Size is based on a sample of data from visitors to google.com. Special code collects data on the height and width of the browser for a sample of users. For a given point in the browser, the tool will tell you what percentage of users can see it. For example, if an important button is in the 80% region it means that 20% of users have to scroll in order to see it. If you’re a web designer, you can use Browser Size to redesign your page to minimize scrolling and make sure that the important parts of the page are always prominent to your audience. We hope people will use this tool to make their websites better, in turn making the web better for everyone.

Anyways, I was curious as to how my blog would fair with this test so I tried to analyze JaypeeOnline using Browser Size and took a screenshot of it.

I have a 1280×800 screen resolution on my laptop and because my blog theme’s layout is centered, it shows that only 60% of readers can view the content that are above the fold. When I checked JaypeeOnline with an Asus Eee PC on 1024×600 resolution, it was about 85-90% reader viewable which is not bad. Although, it would’ve been better if it was optimized for 800×600 resolutions because there are still a lot of users out there who use this screen resolution.

If you want to optimize your content and want to maximize your content’s exposure, then you need to check out and give the Google Browser Size tool a try.

To keep track of the different blog statistics here on JaypeeOnline, my analytics service of choice is Reinvigorate. I’ve been using it for about 3 years now. Aside from that I also use Clicky which I started using early this year. The first free analytics service I tried/used was Google Analytics, but I stopped using it because I didn’t like how it worked and it didn’t have certain features that I wanted/needed and thats why I moved to Reinvigorate. Recently, I started using Google Analytics again so that I have another source of data that I can use to compare with the other analytics services that I use.

Last week, the Google Analytics blog published about a new Free Google Analytics Dashboard Application called Trakkboard. Trakkboard is a free, easy to use desktop application that allows analysts to create dashboards that pull data across different Google Analytics logins and different Google Analytics profiles to display top level metrics all within the same view. Trakkboard is created by German-based company Trakken GmbH and is available in English, Spanish and German.

If you want to get your hands on Trakkboard, first you’ll have to submit your email address to get a license key. Once you have your license key, you can proceed with downloading and installing it. Once its finished installing, you’ll be asked to create a login password for Trakkboard and later on, it will ask for your license key. Next step is to provide your Google Analytics profile login details and once you’ve logged in, you can proceed with adding widgets to your dashboard. Available widgets are: Visits, Visitors, Pageviews, Medium, Source, Top/Flop Keywords, Pages/Visits, Bouncerate, TimeOnSite, All Goals, Goal 1, Goal 2, Goal 3, Goal 4 and Notes. You can also specify the timeline or timespan of the stats displayed on each widget.

Trakkboard is an Adobe AIR app so you’ll need Adobe AIR to be installed on your computer. Since this app is powered by Adobe AIR, it means that its cross-platform and you can install it on any OS (Windows, Mac or Linux).

Trakkboard is ideal for those users who manage several Google Analytics profiles because with this app, you don’t have to login/logout from each profile to check on other profiles. With Trakkboard you can access all those profiles on one single app or window. It’s simple and straightforward so Google Analytics users won’t have a hard time using this app.

Once your computer is infected, Trojan.Ramvicrype will search for files under My Documents, Desktop and Application DataIdentities and renames them with a .vicrypt extension. It also looks for links in the Recent folder and renames all the files in the folders that are pointed to by those links and encrypts each file’s head section. If you try to run any of those files, you’ll get a Vicrypt Error message. A worst case scenario would be a file from the Windows system folder has been recently opened, leading to the Trojan.Ramvicrype encrypting all files in the Windows System folder and critically damaging those files.

Previously, victims of this trojan who were looking for a fix were directed to a site that offered a paid software called AntiVicrypt. Because of this, Symantec and other security companies believe that the Trojan.Ramvicrype is some sort of ransomware and that the company offering AntiVicrypt was also responsible for spreading the trojan. Later, AntiVicrypt was offered as shareware and the trial version was limited to repairing 7 files. As of this time, AntiVicrypt is now offered FREE. I don’t know about you but based on the initial outcome/results, I won’t be trusting this company or any of its products.

To address this issue and help users, Symantec Security Response has developed a free tool to decrypt the encrypted files. The link below not only contains the link to download the free tool but it also includes step-by-step guide on how to use the Trojan.Ramvicrype Removal Tool.

I also have my computer with me but I’m bookmarking this site because I might need it in the near future. For the same reason, I’m sharing it with you today (those who work with PHP coding/programming), because you don’t know when PHPanywhere might come in handy one of these days. Remember the Gmail outage that happened about 2 weeks ago? It lasted about 4 hours causing users to panic and left many “stranded” because they were not able to send or receive emails. What most users didn’t know is that the web version of Gmail was the only one affected or inaccessible. For those people who use Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird and other third-party email clients, it was business as usual.

That’s only one of the advantages of using a desktop client for accessing your webmail like Gmail. With an email client you can also compose or reply to emails while you’re offline, save them as drafts and send them later when you get connected to the Internet. You can also create lots of Folders/Subfolders and use filters to manage your emails. Most if not all email clients let you access several email accounts at once.

If you’d like to avoid the hassle and problems of another Gmail outage, I suggest you install an email client. Today, I’m gonna share with you an email client that lets you access all types of email accounts including Yahoo! Mail. This app that I’m talking about is called the Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop.

Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop is an offline client that lets you manage your various email accounts in one desktop tool. Zimbra mail, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, AOL, Outlook and any other work or personal email account using POP or IMAP is easy to set up in Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop. Each account is separately maintained.

Zimbra Desktop is a free, open source application created by Zimbra, a Yahoo! company that specializes in open source, next-generation messaging and collaboration software. It is easy to install and is multi-platform so you can install it on a Windows, Mac or Linux powered computer. I’ve installed it on my Ubuntu partition and it works smoothly. If not for all the custom folders and message filters that I already have on my Mozilla Thunderbird, I would’ve switched to Zimbra Desktop.

For now, you only have limited access to a few Yahoo! Mail apps (Zimlets) like Flickr and Maps and you won’t have Drop.io that lets you attach 100 MB files. I plan to install Zimbra Desktop on my other laptop so that my wife would have easier and faster access to her Yahoo! Mail acount.
