Online marketing company KISSMetrics, has published a series of posts entitled “The Science of Social Timing“. The first part was about “Social Networks“, the second was about “Timing & Email Marketing” and for the third and final part of the series – “Timing and Blogging” they talk about the effect of timing on blog readership.

The infographic provides a lot of useful information. However, data and statistics vary between blogs and time zones. The main idea here is learning how to use your blog’s stats and analytics and correlating them to get the best results. The best thing you can do as a blogger is to experiment and use whatever works best for you.

Since the advent of the desk job, TV, computers and the Internet, we humans have been spending more time sitting down than we’re supposed to – an average of 9.3 hours per day. This infographic contains not only informative but also alarming data regarding the health risks/dangers of spending too much time sitting down.

Some interesting data from the infographic:

• Sitting 6+ hours per day makes you up to 40% likelier to die within 15 years than someone who sites less than 3. Even if you exercise.
• People with sitting jobs have twice the rate of cardiovascular disease as people with standing jobs.
• Sitting for 8 hours a day at work is unavoidable. It’s the extra sitting outside of work that turns this serious problem deadly.
• The recommended 30 minutes of activity per day is not enough. Interrupt sitting whenever you can by streching, walking/marching in place or doing jumping jacks.
• Sitting at a 135 degree angle puts less strain on your back than hunching forward or sitting straight.
• The human body isn’t built to sit for long periods of time.

I’m sharing this infographic not only for other people but it also serves as a reminder to myself because sometimes I tend to spend several hours sitting down working without taking any breaks or taking time to strech, walk, etc. We need our jobs but our health is more important so we need to make sure that we take care of it. If our job involves a lot of sitting down, then we need to follow the tips provided in the infograph and make sure to implement it.

Yesterday, Akismet reached a milestone – catching its 25 billionth spam comment. To celebrate this milestone, the folks from Akismet has built a minisite called 25 Billion Pieces of Spam. The site features a live counter of the total amount of spam that Akismet has caught, information on how Akismet works, the different types of spam or threal levels and last but not least, a mini Asteroids-like flash game.

Btw, these days Akismet detects spam comments at the rate of about 40 million comments per day. Here’s some additional information or trivia regarding spam and spammers according to Akismet records:

• Spammers are busiest on Friday at 20:00 GMT.
• Spammers are least active on Sundays at 14:00 GMT. (Do spammers go to church?!)
• A blog comment is 8% more likely to be spam on a Saturday morning than it is on a Tuesday evening.

Aside from working on WordPress.com and their other products, one of the priorities of Automattic is keeping their employees healthy. With that, the company recently came up with an idea for Worldwide WP 5K which will allow Automatticians (employees of Automattic) to run/walk together for 5K (3.1 miles) on the same day and be able to exercise together as a company even though they’re from different places across the globe.

The folks from Automattic are not only concerned about their personal health but also with that of WordPress users. That’s why they’re inviting all WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) users to join them in their Worldwide WP 5K.

Here are more details from the official blog post:

WHAT IT IS: A 5k run/walk (approximately 3.1 miles). You can run, walk, or skip. It’s up to you. There’s no time limit and there’s just one requirement: that you participate! [Updated: You can do it inside or outside, on a treadmill or on a track, or even do a swim or a bike ride instead of running/walking - just get moving!]

It’s roughly equal to:

• 3.1 miles
• 12 laps around a track
• approximately 6000-7500 steps
• approximately 50-60 minutes of brisk walking

WHEN: We’re all busy, but we want you to participate, so we’re giving you some flexibility, too. The WWWP5k is set for Sunday, April 10th, but you can do your walk anytime from April 4th -10th (you’ve got a week to fit it in). Just post about it and use the tag “wwwp5k” so we can find you (and for a chance to be Freshly Pressed). :)

WHO: Anyone who’s ever used or loved WordPress (and your families and friends, too).

HOW: You’re welcome to blog your entire route and your preparation (videoblog, perhaps?) but above all we’d love to see where you are and how you’re completing your 5k. Give us a picture of you and what you see when you cross the finish line and tell us your location as you complete your 5k with the rest of the world.

I think that it’s a very cool idea, especially for Automattic to invite bloggers, specifically WordPress users to participate in this event. Staying healthy should be a priority for bloggers and we shouldn’t just focus on making money online, increasing traffic, improving writing skills, improving site performance, search engine optimization, etc.

Although it officially starts on Sunday, April 10th, you can start today, tomorrow or anytime this week as long as you complete the 5K. Personally, I plan to participate in Automattic’s Worldwide WP 5K or WWWP5K by running on the treadmill tomorrow for 50-60 minutes. If I can’t complete it by tomorrow, I’ll continue it the next day.
