I’ve been having problems with my blog recently. If you’ve visited and tried to access JaypeeOnline the past few days, it’s most likely that you experienced some problems viewing the blog. Unlike previous events where the downtime were due to my hosting provider’s incompetence, blog migration or a WordPress plugin conflict, this time the problems were caused by a high volume of traffic. Like many bloggers, I work on increasing my blog traffic and here I am, having problems because of it. Ironic isn’t it?

Because of the efforts and a little bit of SEO work that I put on my blog, the volume of traffic jumped in the last few months and went from double to triple the amount of traffic I had in the first few months of last year. The last couple of months didn’t show any signs of slowing down and the volume of traffic has just kept increasing. It got to the point where my blog is using up more resources and running out of the alloted memory. I’m not complaining at all but I didn’t expect that it would cause me these problems. Btw, having WP Super Cache installed on my blog didn’t help or was not enough to handle the situation.

Anyways, I’ve been busy working on this issues the past few days trying to figure out what’s causing the problem, what I could do to fix it and trying to find alternative solutions. I also contacted my hosting provider and asked for some help. I’m very fortunate to have a very good hosting provider – ServInt, who’ve been very helpful and have provided all the assistance I needed the past few days. Right now, my blog is on a 7-day trial upgrade to a higher VPS account with double the amount of resources. I’m also running a new WordPress caching plugin which is supposedly better than WP Super Cache and is used by a lot of big-time, high-traffic blogs like mashable.com, noupe.com, webdesignerdepot.com, freelanceswitch.com and tutsplus.com just to mention a few. I’m still working on it and will have to fix some of the settings to maximize the caching plugin capabilities and optimize blog performance.

Although I’ve been able to address the issues and have been able to minimize the server load, it’s still a work in progress. Me and my hosting provider will continue to monitor the performance of JaypeeOnline and try to make it work better. Embedding Google Maps on your blog can be quite cumbersome. With the help of this cool WordPress plugin, you can now easily embed Google Maps on your WordPress-powered blog. You can use it for your travel blog or any blog that reviews or deals with establishments & locations or if you simply want to insert a working map on a post or page. I’m talking about the WP Geo plugin – a WordPress plugin that lets you attach geographic coordinate information to posts. It also lets you specify a default geographic location to your WordPress blog. WP Geo is the brain child of British web designer and developer – Ben Huson.

Here’s a short introduction of the WP Geo plugin:

WP Geo is a Google Maps for WordPress plugin which enables you to easily attribute a location and map to a post or page.

Installation:
1. Download the archive file and uncompress it.
2. Put the “wp_geo” folder in “wp-content/plugins”
3. Enable in WordPress by visiting the “Plugins” menu and activating it.
4. Go to the Settings page in the admin and enter your Google API Key and customize the settings.

You can use the WP Geo plugin on your blog in several ways – widget, template tag and shortcode.

My Take:
Providing a working map (Google Maps) on your travel blog can be very useful and helpful for your readers and visitors. With a working map, your readers can check out the exact location of the place you’re blogging about or any place you mention on your post. Aside from that, having a working map on your blog would keep your visitors on your blog (less bounce rate), because they don’t have to go to an external website to open/use a map.

I also see this plugin working for Food blogs who feature different restaurants and culinary establishments. With the WP Geo plugin, you can provide a map with the location of the restaurant/establishment you’re blogging about so your readers would have a better idea on where it is located.

The WP Geo plugin can also be useful for any type of blog when you need to provide your readers directions or want them to have a better knowledge of a place your blogging about and its location. I haven’t tried the WP Geo plugin, but I’m keeping it on my stash of plugins just in case I might need to use it one of these days.

This is the first blog update for 2010 which covers most if not all the changes I’ve made/done to JaypeeOnline since my last blog update back in November. Most of the recent changes were done to improve page load times for JaypeeOnline. Why the sudden focus/concern about page speed/page load time? Because these past couple of months, I’ve read several articles that talk about page speed becoming a ranking factor this year and Google’s recent release of the Page Speed Report Tool in Webmaster Tools. With that, I checked JaypeeOnline’s page load times and identified the files, scripts/widgets that sends a lot of requests or extra DNS lookups, adding to the overal page speed/page load time.

Uninstalled Plugins

• SexyBookmarks – adds a (X)HTML compliant list of social bookmarking icons to each post.
• TweetMeme Button – Adds a button which easily lets you retweet your blog posts.
• Where did they go from here – Show “Readers who viewed this page, also viewed” links on your page. Much like Amazon.com’s product pages.

Uninstalled the SexyBookmarks and TweetMeme Button plugins because they make several large connections in order for them to do their job, which amounts to a higher page load time. If not for the issue of page speed, I wouldn’t have removed these plugins as I really like them, they’re very useful and they go well with the design/layout of my blog theme. I was able to hit two birds with one stone on this because I was able to get rid of two plugins and I was able to reduce the overall page load time. The Where did they go from here plugin worked well but I had to remove it because I had to move back the Adsense unit to that spot.

Installed Plugins

• Clicky for WordPress – Integrates Clicky (analytics) on your blog!
• WP Minify – this plugin uses the Minify engine to combine and compress JS and CSS files to improve page load time.

Re-installed the Clicky for WordPress plugin (blog statistics/analytics) because I needed something that would let me check my blog stats on the iPhone. There’s a Google Analytics app on iTunes but I prefer Clicky over Google Analytics. I installed the WP Minify plugin to help me compress JS and CSS files in order to improve JaypeeOnline’s page load time. The first time I installed (a couple months back), I got errors, so I decided to uninstall it. I gave it another try and this time it worked fine without any errors.

Other Changes

• Removed the JaypeeOnline Facebook Fan Page widget from the sidebar.
• Edited the Author Info section and added/removed some stuff.
• Added Chitika Premium ads which show up only to visitors referred by search engines.
• Created a custom social bookmark section, located at the bottom of every post (BOOKMARK or SHARE IT!). This is not a plugin. I’ve manually coded it into theme.

I removed the Facebook Fan Page widget because it was erratic. There were times when it was messed up and somtimes it won’t load at all. It’s javascript and it really slowed down the page load time. I would’ve kept it if it at least brought in some traffic from Facebook, but it didn’t. So it wasn’t really worth having. Edited the Author Info section and added my Twitter and Facebook links. I added the Chitika Premium ads two months ago, but I wasn’t able to include it in my blog update. Because I uninstalled the SexyBookmarks plugin, I had to find an alternative social bookmarking plugin but decided to create a custom social bookmarking section. I downloaded some social bookmarking icons and created the “Bookmark or Share It!” graphic using Adobe Photoshop. Hope you guys like it. Let me know what you think about it, okay?

I’m also thinking about reinstalling the WP Polls plugin and having a weekly or monthly poll here on JaypeeOnline. What do you think?

New year, new set of goals. I created my blog goals for 2009 to motivate and encourage myself to do my best and improve my blog. I made sure that the goals I set were neither easy or difficult but rather, something that I could achieve if I would exert extra effort, spend time and focus on it. Last year was a great year for me and my blog and I can say that a huge part of the success can be attributed to those goals. Before I proceed with this year’s goals, I’d like to take this time to share with you the results of last year’s goals.

When I set those goals last year, I wasn’t sure how much of it I’d accomplish, but I’m happy to say that I almost successfully achieved 100% of the goals I set last year.

2009 Blog Goals
1. Reach at least 500 RSS subscribers (currently at 300+).
600 RSS subscribers at the of 2009.
2. Increase the average daily blog traffic (pageviews and unique visitors).
- Traffic in the last quarter was triple the amount of traffic for the first 2 quarters of 2009.
3. Increase the monthly earnings on Adsense and other affiliate networks.
- Daily and monthly Adsense earnings have tripled.
4. Increase the posting frequency to 6 or 7 weekly posts.
- Now averaging 5-6 posts per week.
5. Get the blog’s Google PageRank back to 4 (currently at PR 2).
- PR started at 2 then dropped to 0 and is now back up to 3.
6. Get back within Alexa’s top 100,000.
- Reached the mid 60,000’s and is currently at 73,000+.
7. Have guest bloggers write for JaypeeOnline.
- Had 2 guest bloggers last year.
8. Improve the community around JaypeeOnline.
- More readers and commenters. More interaction among readers and myself.
9. Continue the Weekend Roundup feature.
- Weekend Roundup is now at its 66th edition.
10. Host a group writing project (You can share any good topic that you have in mind).
- I’m adding this to this year’s goals.
11. Release a free WordPress theme.
- Got in touch w/ a designer but something came up and had to put it on hold.
12. Have more blog contests/giveaway.
- Had the Threadless Tshirt Giveaway and $1,500 Thanksgiving Giveaway.
13. Attend a WordPress WordCamp or a Blog World Expo.
- First goal off the list. Attended WordCamp Las Vegas.
14. Attend the 2009 Philippine Blog Awards (more of a wish).
- Wasn’t there but my blog won the Technology Category so it’s all good.

Now, for this year’s blog goals. Some of it are similar to last year’s goals but I’ll be working on improving the current numbers and hopefully be able to improve – double or triple the numbers like last year.

2010 Blog Goals
1. Reach at least 1,000 RSS subscribers. (Currently at 600+)
2. Increase the average daily blog traffic (pageviews and unique visitors).
3. Increase the monthly earnings on Adsense and other affiliate networks.
4. Have additional sources of income aside from Adsense and current affiliate networks.
5. Have more direct advertisers.
6. Invite more guest bloggers on JaypeeOnline.
7. Continue the Weekend Roundup and add 1 new weekly/monthly feature.
8. Host a group writing project.
9. Release a free WordPress theme.
10. Have more blog contests/giveaways.
11. Attend more WordPress WordCamps or other blogger meetups.
12. Attend the 2010 Philippine Blog Awards.
13. Launch my other blog projects.
14. Help (sponsor) more aspiring & promising bloggers as well as blogging events.
15. Improve my “social skills” – more blog hopping/commenting, regular Twitter activity.
16. Do some guest blogging on other, bigger blogs.

There are other minor goals that I’ve listed and some that I’m still thinking about, but basically these are my blog goals for this year. If I come up with something new, I’ll update this post and add it to the list. With effort, focus and help/support from you guys, I believe that I’ll be able to achieve these goals be successful like last year.

I was supposed to publish my year end post last week but like I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, I was pretty busy the past couple of weeks with all the family gatherings and activities tied to the holiday season. Anyways, when I first did this two years ago, I didn’t plan or expect that this would be a regular “annual” thing here on JaypeeOnline. It turned out to be a great way for me to look back and appreciate all the blessings that I’ve received for that year. I know this is a bit late, but I really feel that I should do this so here it is.

The following is the list of events and other significant things that happened and/or was published on JaypeeOnline for the year 2009:

• I set up my blog goals for 2009, a first of its kind for JaypeeOnline. Btw, I’ll be publishing a different post regarding last year’s blog goals.
• Achieved one of the goals I set for last year by attending WordCamp Las Vegas with my friend Allan. Looking for this year’s event and hopefully attend WordCamp LA as well.
• Had my first guest blog post here on JaypeeOnline – HowTo: Move From Blogger to WordPress courtesy of Gemma Baltazar (The Lady Programmer).
• Made it to the top 25 of the Philippine’s Top Blogs based on Alexa rankings.
• HowTo: 10 Ways To Bring Sexy Back To Your Blog – second guest post here on JaypeeOnline, courtesy of Jan Geronimo (Writing To Exhale).
• Left MediaTemple and moved to a different, private dedicated server.
• Got back after a 2-month hiatus.
• Finally got my own blog mascot for JaypeeOnline.
• Created and uploaded my new customized Twitter background, incorporating my new blog mascot.
• Launched my second blog contest/giveaway – the Threadless Tshirt Giveaway.
• Found out that I was one of the finalists for the 2009 Philippine Blog Awards.
• Highlight of the year for me and my blog – JaypeeOnline brings home the trophy for the Technology Category in the 2009 Philippine Blog Awards.
• Participated in my first Blog Action Day and blogged about “climate change”.
• Finally, after having issues and lots of problems with my previous hosting provider, I migrated to my new web host – ServInt.
• Launched my 3rd blog contest/giveaway – the $1,500 Thanksgiving Giveaway. Which by the way, was a huge success, thanks to all the participants and sponsors.
• After more than a month of waiting, I finally received my trophy and a Nokia E52 from the Philippine Blog Awards.
• Got an early Christmas gift from my lovely wife – a shiny, new iPhone 3GS.

I know there are many things to be thankful for but last year’s highlight was winning the Tech category in the Philippine Blog Awards. It wouldn’t have been possible without the help and support of my family, friends and you guys, the regular readers/visitors of JaypeeOnline. I’m happy that I almost successfully accomplished 100% of the blog goals I set for last year. Don’t worry, I’ll get into more of the details of that in a different post. With all the blessings that I received in 2009, it was definitely a great year for me and my blog. I’m also glad that I was able to share my blessings with you guys via my $1,500 Thanksgiving Giveaway.

I hope that this year – 2010 would be a better year for all of us. Once again, thank you so much for all your support!

Its the first day of January and the first day of 2010. I’d like to this time and opportunity to send my greetings to everyone – my family, friends and regular readers of JaypeeOnline a Happy New Year!

I wasn’t able to post a Christmas message/greeting last week because I had my hands full with different activities – family gatherings, christmas parties and other personal stuff. Now, I want to make sure that I didn’t miss this opportunity and post my new year greetings. Whether you had a lousy or great year in 2009, I hope that this new year 2010 would be better and would bring you more success, happiness and blessings.

With regards to my blog, I’ll be publishing my year end post and a compilation of my best posts of 2009 later this weekend together with other posts that I was supposed to publish last week but wasn’t able to due to my busy schedule.

Hi guys! I know some of you must be wondering why I haven’t updated the blog or posted anything in almost two weeks. I’m still here and I haven’t given up on the blog yet. It’s just that the past couple weeks has been busy and filled with several personal/family appointments and activities. My mother-in-law came over to visit us last week so I spent the past few days with my family – going out, doing stuff together, visiting family and friends, etc. We also went to Disneyland last Wednesday as an early celebration of my son’s birthday.

During the few days that I’ve been away, I’ve lost my blogging “rhythm” or “groove” and I expected that to happen. This happens to me when I stop blogging for a while, the flow of ideas stop and I get writer’s block. That’s why most of the time, when I have my blogging “groove” on, I don’t stop. I keep posting stuff, sometimes even 2-3 posts a day. It was nice to have some sort of break from work/blogging and spend time with my family, but it came with a small price. Nevertheless it was worth it and I don’t mind doing it again because my family is more important to me. Anyways, here I am now trying to break free from this “writer’s block” try to get things back rolling.

Oh yeah, aside from the mini hiatus/writer’s block, another thing that kept me from getting back to blogging is my new toy. Some of you who are on Facebook might already know what it is. It’s a gadget and I’ve been busy tinkering with it the past few days. Don’t worry, I’ll let you guys know what it is as I’ll be blogging about it next.

There you go. Just wanted to let you guys know that I’m doing fine and I’m “officially” back. I’ll be spending the next few days, replying to tons of comments and publishing some new stuff. So please bear with me and do come back for the updates. Thank you and have a nice day!

Yesterday morning, a DHL delivery guy came knocking at the door and gave me the package. I knew that the package was sent but I wasn’t expecting it to arrive that day. Anyways, as soon as I saw where it came from I knew what was inside the package. I was very excited that I tore the packaging and immediately took out the contents. After a month of waiting I finally got my hands on the trophy.

The trophy is a jeepney (the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines) full of passengers. I really like it and I think it embodied the goal and theme of this year’s Philippine Blog Awards which is “One Blogging Nation“. One thing though, it would have been better if each trophy had a description on it saying that it was for the 2009 Philippine Blog Awards and included the category name like “Best Technology Blog”.

Aside from the trophy, all the winners in the main categories were also given new Nokia cellphones courtesy of Nokia Philippines, one of the main sponsors of the event. Btw, I got a Nokia E52.

I’ve been playing around with the Nokia E52 since yesterday and so far I really like it. I might publish a review of it later.

Did my last blog update post about a couple months back and I’ve done some changes to the blog so I decided to do another blog update post. These blog update posts have become a “regular” habit of mine here on JaypeeOnline and I consider it as some kind of “checkpoint” to help me remember the plugins I installed/uninstalled on the period of time. Its also a way for me to inform my readers of the changes I’ve made to the blog especially the changes I’ve made front-end wise, changes in the blog theme, design, layout, etc.

The changes I’ve listed below are the changes I’ve made since my previous blog update.

Uninstalled Plugins

• LinkWithin – Displays recommended stories and associated thumbnails from your blog.
• Most Commented – Retrieves a list of the posts with the most comments.
• Popularity Contest – keeps a count of your post, category and archive views, comments, trackbacks, etc. and uses them to determine which of your posts are most popular.
• Global Translator – automatically translates your blog in the following 41 different languages.

I removed LinkWithin because based on my observation, visitors weren’t using it that much and it uses up too much space and makes the overall post page layout more cluttered. Uninstalled the Most Commented and Popularity Contest plugins because my theme has built-in functions that make both plugins redundant. Removed the Global Translator plugin because of security issues and I will discuss more about it in an upcoming post.

Installed Plugins

• Where did they go from here – Show “Readers Also Viewed” links on your page.
• Theme Authenticity Checker – scans theme files for potentially malicious or unwanted code.
• TweetMeme Button – Adds a button which easily lets you retweet your blog posts.
• WP Super Cache – Very fast caching plugin for WordPress.
• Yoast Breadcrumbs – Outputs a fully customizable breadcrumb path.

Installed the Where did they go from here plugin and placed it beside the Related Posts to display posts that readers visited after viewing/reading that current post. This is very useful because it lists some posts that aren’t displayed in the Related Posts and lists posts that may also be of interest to the new reader. I installed the Theme Authenticity Checker to help me verify the themes that I review in my WordPress Theme reviews. The TweetMeme button is the small graphic displayed on the upper left portion of each post and displays the number of times the post was RT’d (retweeted) and enables the reader to easily RT the post.

I installed WP Super Cache in the efforts of solving the problems I had with my previous web host. It didn’t work because the problem was not with my blog but with my web host its just that they didn’t want to admit it and they were trying to put the blame on my blog.

I’ve been planning on implementing breadcrumb navigation on my blog for a long time now but didn’t get to do it. I finally found time to install Yoast’s Breadcrumbs plugin. This plugin displays the path and location of the post/page that the reader is currently viewing. Helps users to easily navigate through the blog/website. The breadcrumb path is the text displayed at the top most part of each post and page (Home > Post).

Other Changes

I didn’t do much changes to the blog theme and layout except for some minor tweaks on the sidebar.

• Added the JaypeeOnline Facebook Fan Page at the sidebar.
• Removed the Entrecard widget. Still thinking about whether I should put it back or not.
• Moved the Trackbacks/Pingbacks section below the Comment form.

I think thats it, I mean that’s all the changes I’ve done since my last blog update. Sometimes my memory fails me so I might have missed one or two changes and if I did, I’ll update the post later.

If you noticed that this blog was inaccessible in the past 24 hours, its because I’ve migrated it to my new web host. DNS propagation usually takes about 24 hours to take effect, depending on your location. Just wanted to update you guys about that so you know what happened and I’m also sharing with you my recent experience with web hosting issues.

This month of October has been the worst month for me and my blog in terms of web hosting. Would you believe that I’ve migrated my blog at least 6 times just this month? In my effort to find a new webhost, I opened an account with 2 other web hosts but for some certain reasons, it didn’t work out so I had to migrate back to my previous host. Anyways, what prompted me to go and find a different web host was the “issues” I had with my previous hosting provider.

Most of you guys know that my blog’s hosting account got suspended several times due to “high cpu usage”. I tried installing WP Super Cache and other plugins that will help minimize the load on my server, decreased the search engine crawl rate on my blog and tweaked my robots.txt file all in the effort of avoiding using up my server’s cpu resources. Unfortunately all of those efforts were in vain because I still got my account suspended not once, twice but three times! When I asked my web host for the reason why they suspended my account, they gave the same answer – “high cpu usage“. This time, I asked them what could be causing the high cpu usage and the Level 2 Tech Support people gave me these lame answers/excuses.

This is because the site is open for anyone to search for whatever they want, and this can cause malicious users to abuse this, which in this case it appears they have. The easiest fix for this is to make a log in and for anyone to search, perform a GET search, they must be logged in.

It looks like you have your website setup with a forum script or members site that is publicly accessable. youll need to adjust your website so that only members who are logged in can view pages / posts / profiles / images. This should resolve the issue. I am unsuspending the account. Please make the changes.

A blog is a forum, its a specific form of forum, however it is based on the same software. One page, that holds several posts. i do not know if the site has profiles or not. I got the information because i work at a hosting company and do this work every day all day and happen to know that when ever a site is suspended and in the abuse report it contains several hundred apache get requests to random files and directories, such as 3fb5c0424e085100d6b88904b308d6b0.css?t=1027215365 the problem is that the site / profiles/ forum/ blog/ community/ what ever it is, is configured to be openly accessible to the internet and because of this someone or some group of people are access the site in an abusive way, often times looking for exploits. These requests overload the server. The fix is to disable the site so it is not open accessible to anyone who is not logged in with a correct username and password.

Btw, my blog was hosted on a reseller account and because of these “high cpu usage” issues, they were trying to get me to upgrade to a VPS account. With that and these lame answers, I knew that they were just trying to make money and get me to upgrade my account. It was at this time that I decided to move out and find a new web host.

After checking out my options, I finally decided to go with ServInt who I found via BloggingTips.com and purchased a VPS account. My blog has only been with them for a day but I’ve opened my account about 2 days ago and since then I’ve been dealing with their customer support. Based on my experience with their support, all I can say that their customer support and service is AWESOME! They have 24/7 support and free phone support. Not only did they help me with the setup and answered my questions but support was replying to my tickets even at 1 AM! Their sales and tech support aren’t only friendly and helpful but also very knowledgeable.

I tried migrating the other day but had some issues because of an old version of MySQL so I had to wait until support upgraded it before I was able to restore my WordPress database backup. Now that I’ve successfully migrated my blog to its new home on the web, I can now get back to blogging and focus on more important stuff like my upcoming blog contest.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that I won’t have any major web hosting issues again and that everything would work out with my new web host – ServInt.

NOTE: Just to be clear, my previous web host/hosting provider was NOT TechHive. TechHive was just using a reseller account from another hosting company. All of the problems/issues I had was with the other hosting company, not TechHive.
