JaypeeOnline Recent Downtime

Blog Downtime

My apologies for the recent downtime that most of you might’ve experienced here on JaypeeOnline. If you tried to access this blog sometime between 10:00 PM US Pacific Time til 9:30 AM this morning then you know what I’m talking about.

The server on which my blog was hosted at was scheduled for a routine maintenance procedure that required the server to be rebooted. This procedure normally would take about 15 to 30 minutes the most. Unfortunately, it took longer than that, way longer than that. According to the report I got from Pingdom, my blog was down for more than 10 hours.

So what caused the problem? According to the tech support person who helped fixed the problem, the server reboot caused a bunch of updates to run at the same time and ended up hanging, which in turn caused other processes to lock up. This is the first time this happened and I certainly hope it would be the last. Although I was really disappointed, I know that it was an accident and that these things can happen to anybody, to any webhost. I’m just glad that the tech support personnel were quick to respond to my support tickets and that they got JaypeeOnline back online.

I was gonna publish some new articles last night but wasn’t able to because of the downtime. So, expect to see a few articles published close to each other. Btw, if you want to keep up with the latest updates here on JaypeeOnline, the best thing to do is subscribe to the RSS feed or subscribe via Email so next time, even if the blog is down and inaccesible, you’d still get the latest articles on your favorite RSS reader or Email inbox.

  1. @Sourish – The scheduled maintenance required a reboot because some server software were upgraded. Unfortunately, in my case the reboot caused some updates to hang all at the same time and caused the server to crash.

Btw, I’m using the Comment Info Detector to display the commenter’s country, OS and browser.

  2. @Jhay – Is that so? How long did the downtime last?

Yep, downtimes occur on all webhosts. What makes Servint one of the best in the industry is their customer service. They have knowledgeable tech support, their response time is fast and they tell you exactly what happened.

  3. My blog just had a downtime about 8 hours ago, a script flooded the server with requests it ate up all the memory.

Downtimes still occur, but this is the first time it has happened to me since moving to ServInt. But atleast I have a clear idea of what caused the problem and the support team are always there to help.
