JaypeeOnline Is Now On Dreamhost

Dreamhost

A month ago, I mentioned in my interview with Blog-O-Rama that one of my goals was to have paid hosting for JaypeeOnline and now it’s become a reality. Yes, I finally have my own paid web hosting with Dreamhost. (thanks Jim!)

I signed-up last Friday but I was too busy and didn’t have time to do it. So if you noticed any downtime earlier, that because I was setting up my account, moving all my files and restoring my backups and finished around 1 AM Sunday morning. I supposed to finish this entry and publish it but I was so sleepy. The transition went well and I didn’t have any problems restoring my backups. The only thing that caused delay was me trying to get used to Dreamhost’s user panel. It’s totally different from Cpanel of which I’ve been using for a long time.

I’d also like to thank the guys at IGB for hosting my blog totally free for several years. You’ve been a great help to me and for JaypeeOnline and I will never forget your kindness and hospitality.

Other Updates:

First update: When WordPress 2.1.3 was released, I wasn’t able to upgrade my installation right away because I was more worried about the problems I was experiencing within my blog. The only time I was able to upgrade was when I moved to Dreamhost. It was also easy because they have a One-Click install section where you get to choose different programs like WordPress, Joomla, phpBB and have it installed for you with just one click of a button. All I had to do was upload my custom files and restore my database using phpMyAdmin.

Second update: I installed a plugin called Edit Comment created by Andrew Sutherland. What it does is that it enables blog readers to edit their comments within a specified time limit. This is useful because there are times when readers want to change or add something to their comment or sometimes correct a misspelt word and couldn’t do it because they’ve already hit the submit button. I know how it is because I’ve experienced it a lot of times myself while leaving comments on other blogs. I’ve configured the plugin to let readers edit their comments within 30 minutes. Please let me know if it doesn’t work or if you experience problems with this feature.

Third update: I’m slowly switching to Gmail. If I frequently visit your blogs, you might notice that I’m using a new email address. I now use one of my Gmail accounts as my primary email account for blogging and for personal use. One of the main reasons why I made the switch is because of the POP access which I couldn’t do with Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail without using a third-party program. With Gmail, I can download email on my desktop using Thunderbird or in my Pocket PC. I’ll still be using my Yahoo! accounts but only for backup purposes and other subscription details.

  1. @fruityoaty – Thanks for sharing. Yeah, the staff of Dreamhost is really friendly and the hosting experience is different between users coz sites are hosted in different servers. Some servers get a lot of downtime while others rarely do. :)

@Andrew – Yeah, I've heard of A Small Orange. I just forgot where or from who. I'll check them out later and compare prices and specs with other hosting companies for future reference in case things won't work out with Dreamhost. Hopefully I won't have to move again. Thanks for the info. :)

Regarding Media Temple, I did hear about that before from a friend. So I guess it's true. Hehe

    @Shari – Thank you! :)

  2. @Jaypee: I already have a VPS with A Small Orange. Two of my sites are hosted there. It started out rough with them but now I'm quite happy. That's where I'm planning to move. I have heard though that ASO's shared servers are also very good. Regarding Media Temple, can you spell "seriously overhyped"?. I suggest you stay away from them. I'd pick DH over MT any day.

  3. Hey Jaypee… re: your question "why did you switch to Site5?"

Oh, it was simply a matter of price at the time. I got a good deal with Site5. But yeah, I had no big issues with Dreamhost – good price, reliable… and most importantly (which people often overlook when it comes to bargain hunting)… the customer service was pretty decent and timely. Well, that was MY experience, so I don't really know what's it's like for others.

  4. @dimaks – Power-up? That sounds like something that you get from a video game, like the mushroom in Super Mario. Hehe :D

@jorge – With what you have just mentioned, I think Hostgator is the better choice coz of their uptime. Anyways, 100 mysql dbs is more than what I need.

But then like you said, not all Dreamhost hostees experience problems with downtime coz it depends on which server you're on. My friend Jim, who gave me the promo code doesn't have any downtime problems. Unfortunately for me, I'm in one of the problematic servers. :P

So MediaTemple is better? How bout their uptime?

  5. pricewise, dreamhost wins the first year hands down. after that, hostmonster is slightly cheaper. space-wise, hostmonster has more storage and bandwidth, but is limited to only 100 mysql and 100 postgresql databases. uptime-wise, i've only had one instance where hostmonster was down for a significant amount of time (3+ hours), while i've had my share of headaches with dreamhost — pero depende din sa mga kasama mo sa server. may iba akong kilala na maswerte sa server nila.

pero if i can afford it, mediatemple talaga sana haha

  6. @Jai – Thanks for sharing that with us. :)

@Ymir – I see, I didn't know that. But anyways, I'm very happy with Gmail and I'm using Thunderbird as my email client so everything's working out great! :D

@jorge – I know. I read the comments and complaints of other Dreamhost customers and realized that the situation was worse than I thought. Thanks, my friend already hooked me up with a promo code. That's one of the reasons why I went with Dreamhost, the promo codes. Budget is quite tight right now and it was the most affordable for me with the specs that I needed and more.

So who would you recommend, Hostmonster or Dreamhost? :)

  7. count yourself lucky, you just missed the massive downtimes LOL. happened around 2-3 weeks ago. one of my projects is on dreamhost, but i personally use hostmonster, just less downtime overall kahit walang promo code discounts. sana sinabi mo, may $97-off akong promo code lying around somewhere.

  8. @Andrew – I wasn't aware of this issues. My friend who's hosted with Dreamhost doesn't have any problems with downtime. I think not all sites are affected because only a few servers are experiencing downtimes. Where do you plan to move? Yeah, I'm gonna stick with DH for a while, see what happens and hopefully everything will be okay. Thanks for the heads-up though. :)

  9. I'm on Dreamhost too. Do you realize what you've gotten yourself into?? :) Lately DH has been giving me a hard time with their annoying downtimes. I'm already planning on moving out. But then again, all webhosts have their quirks. Stick it out with DH first and let's hope they don't disappoint you like they did me.

  10. @insinto – Continuous? I hope so but as you have seen I've experienced downtime even with Dreamhost. It seems that they're having a lot of downtime recently and the customers are unhappy.

  11. @fruityoaty – Yup, I initially signed up for IGB's free hosting package but later got additional bandwidth from a forum contest. Last month, they upgraded my account and doubled my bandwidth. I had to move coz of incompatibilities with PHP 5.

If Dreamhost is very good, then why did you switch to Site5? Hehe..just curious. :D
