One of my favorite commercials shown during Super Bowl XLIV aside from the Google Parisian Love ad, was the Lebron James vs Dwight Howard McDonald’s commercial which is a remake of the iconic 1993 Super Bowl commercial entitled “The Showdown” featuring hall-of-famers Michael Jordan and Larry Bird.
This new version entitled “Check This” features Cleveland Cavaliers star Lebron James and Orland Magic’s Dwight Howard playing a game of H-O-R-S-E over a Big Mac and some fries. The new ad also features the reappearance of Larry Bird. The ad was directed by Joe Pytka, commercial director for McDonalds who happens to be the same person who filmed the original version. “Check This” was filmed at the Indiana Pacer’s homecourt – Conseco Fieldhouse, Indiana in early January, 2010.
You won’t appreciate the new version if you haven’t seen the original version, so I’ve posted both the old and new versions below. Enjoy!
Michael Jordan vs. Larry Bird – The Showdown (1993)
Lebron James vs. Dwight Howard – Check This (2010)
IMO, the original was better although the new version is also funny and entertaining. One thing though, it would’ve been better if it was Michael Jordan not Larry Bird who came over to get the Big Mac and fries at the end. What do you think? Which version do you like better, “The Showdown” or “Check This”?
