Comic book adaptations are getting really popular in Hollywood especially after the success of movies like Spiderman, X-Men, Transformers, Iron Man and the Dark Knight. I was overjoyed when I recently found out that one of my favorite cartoons that I love to watch when I was kid is being made into a movie, G.I. Joe.
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra is a live action full featured film based on the popular comic, toy and cartoon franchise in the 80′s. It will be directed by renowned filmmaker Stephen Sommers, the same guy behind movies like The Jungle Book, Deep Rising, The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and Van Helsing. The screenplay was co-written by Stuart Beattie (Collateral, Derailed, 30 Days of Night) and Skip Woods (Swordfish, Hitman).
Here’s a short video introducing the main characters and also plot of the movie.
Paramount Pictures is scheduled to release G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra this coming summer on August 7, 2009.

Like other avid G.I. Joe fans, I’ve been waiting a long time for this. I wanted the movie to portray the characters and story like the original one. Unfortunately, that won’t be possible because some of the elements of the original story will be missing. First, according to reports and the video earlier, in this movie G.I. Joe members will be an international team of operatives and not an all American team which is how the original story goes. From the picture above, Destro doesn’t look like the Destro we know that wears a shiny silver mask. I don’t know if that will change as the story goes but some fans are already concerned about this. Fans are also questioning the casting of some of the actors like Marlon Wayans as Ripcord.
I have mixed emotions about what I’ve seen so far and I surely hope that they don’t mess up this one because G.I. Joe is a classic. Paramount Pictures plans to make it into a trilogy and if they want to be successful, they have to make the first one good.

@BANE – I know, I was thinking the same thing. They should’ve stuck to the original theme and made it look like the real G.I. Joe that people are expecting and looking forward to. They owe it to the fans, right?
Like you, I’m hoping that this movie will be good. I didn’t wait several years for G.I. Joe to be made into a movie and then have Hollywood mess it up.
Thanks for sharing!

Looks a little too modern for me. Maybe I’m oldschool. But I hope GI Joe isnt going to be like Transformers. That was a terrible movie. Movies like Independence Day, Armagedon & GI JANE with the over the top patriotic music and lame characters are simply terrible. I just hope GI Joe isnt like these. And yes, I said Transformers. The 1990′s are long gone, lets get passed the “Liberty” style theme and soundtracks.
